Rory McIlory and Jon Rahm headline the field for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open this week. It is somewhat surprising that more top players are not in the field, as the Ballyliffin in Donegal, Ireland is a links course that should be a perfect prep for the Open Championship in two weeks. McIlroy is listed as the favorite to win this week at odds of +525, while Rahm is the second choice at odds of +625. No other player is listed at odds of less than +2050. Let’s look at the odds and predictions for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open

Odds Analysis
Rory McIlroy +525
I think you have to give Rory a big chance to win this week even at these low odds. He will be looking to win his home Open for the second time in three years. The concern with backing Rory, and I say this about him a lot, is that he doesn’t win often enough to be trusted as a favorite. Having said that, this field is not that strong and Rory played this course a lot as an amateur. He is my top choice, but I am wary.
Jon Rahm +625
I sure can’t argue with taking Rahm this week, as he made a nice run and nearly won the Open de France. He won the Open in Spain in April and in his last three European Tour events he has two wins and a fifth place finish.
Rafael Cabrera Bello +2050
I think there is value in taking RCB this week, as he has four top tens in his last six starts. He won last year’s Scottish Open so we know he can play links golf. He had been playing really well until last week’s missed cut in France.
Matthew Fitzpatrick +2050
I would like Fitzpatrick in this event except that he simply hasn’t played well in the month of July the last two years with six missed cuts. I am tempted to overlook that one stat simply because Fitzpatrick has the type of game that should do well on this course, as he hits it straight and putts well.
Shane Lowry +2250
I think Lowry has some value at these odds, as he won as an amateur in this event in 2009. He finished in a tie for 5th in 2013 and he had top 25 finishes the last two years. If both McIlroy and Rahm falter then Lowry could get into the mix.
Chris Wood +3800
My longshot this week is Wood who easily could have won last week in Paris, but he had two late bogeys. Woods is considered a links specialist and he has done well in this event with three top ten finishes.
Course: Ballyliffin in Donegal, Ireland is the site for this year’s Irish Open. The course has been used on the European Tour just once previously and that was in 2002. You almost have to throw out what happened that year, as wind were 40 mph on one day and play was actually suspended due to high wind gusts. Only five players broke par. The course is a true links course and should help players get ready for the Open Championship in a couple of weeks. The course is a par 72 that measures 7,462 yards. It will be all about staying out of the rough for the players this week, as reports have the rough as very difficult.
