European Tour Betting - Afrasia Bank Mauritius Open Matchups

Four-time Major winner, World Golf Hall of Famer and former world No. 1 Ernie Els designed the course, so why not play on it. Els will make his debut in the Afrasia Bank Mauritius Open when the event returns to the Four Seasons Golf Club Mauritius at Anahita and he’ll look to dethrone defending champion Dylan Frittelli, who is the betting favorite at +785 at BookMaker.eu. The fourth playing of the event, and second at the Four Seasons, will feature all three former winners with South Korean Jeunghun Wang, who won here two years ago, and 2015 champion George Coetzee joining Frittelli.

Need to Know

Stretching out to over 7,400 yards, the Four Seasons is a resort course so the length shouldn’t scare any of the pros. The fairways are generous and the width favors distance over accuracy, making the layout better suited for long-ball hitters. The layout has the typical four par-5s that are all scoreable, and a difficult stretch of long par-4s that all measure over 450 yards, which are easy for distance hitters to make up strokes. At only 157 yards, the par-3 17th proved to be the most difficult in the final round two years ago because of fierce winds. The scores were much higher that week with only two players finishing below par. Weather could be a factor with rain expected and the wind gusts picking up over the weekend, but not as bad as two years ago.

Afrasia Bank Mauritius Open Matchup Picks

Romain Langasque -115 vs. Justin Harding

Rising Frenchman Langasque secured his European Tour card with a late season run on the Challenge Tour, which included his first professional win back on home soil. If wind becomes a factor, Langasque certainly has the mettle to beat the conditions. He did after all win the Amateur Championship at Carnoustie, a course that tests every players wind-playing ability. Harding missed the cut here in 2016 and needs to get over the mental hurdle of that rough outing.

Bernd Wiesberger -115 vs. Victor Perez

It’s always a risk betting on a player coming off an injury, and Wiesberger hasn’t teed it up since missing the cut at the China Open in April. A serious wrist injury put him on the shelf, but he’s fit enough to resume playing or he likely wouldn’t be here. He’s a four-time winner on the European Tour and reached No. 23 in the world rankings before the injury, so the talent is there. He’s fallen in the rankings through no fault of his own and the Austrian is looking to get back on track, and that should be a great motivator. Perez is on a run of nice form with the latest a T3 in Hong Kong last week. However, he’s not a long-baller and the course length isn’t ideal for his game.

Ernie Els -115 vs. Haydn Porteous

Els is the sentimental pick given his status as the most decorated player in the field. And it’s his course so that should serve as some kind of home field advantage. “Hopefully a little insider knowledge will work in my favor,” he said recently. He’s making his debut in the tournament, but that’s irrelevant considering he designed the course and has played on hundreds if not thousands of different layouts while winning 71 professional events. And his participation isn’t just a good will gesture. He’s been playing at a high level recently with a T36 at the CJ Cup and T37 at the RSM Classic, finishing that track with a 64.

Thomas Aiken +105 vs. Nicolas Colsaerts

Going against a player who calls the Four Seasons his second home could be betting suicide, but we’re going to do it anyway by leaning toward Aiken. We were reminded of just how talented Aiken is when he finished as runner-up at the Nordea Masters in August and his game got stronger after that. He carded a final round 62 at the Hong Kong Open for his third top-20 in his last four starts. He’s never played Four Seasons, but he got a top-four finish at Heritage in 2015.
