It comes down to this on the European Tour. The final event of the season with the top-50 golfers in the Race to Dubai will battle for the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai. There is also the cash, and prestige that come with winning the Race to Dubai. Bernd Wiesberger sits atop the standings heading into the week, but as many as five players can overtake him as the Euro Tour’s best player. Looking for his third win at this event in the last eight years, Rory McIlroy opened as the betting favorite at online sportsbooks. There’s no shortage of talent with Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose and Matthew Fitzpatrick rounding out the top-5 on the odds board. Odds Analysis
Rory McIlroy +385
Is it really safe to bet against McIlroy? The odds are short and there are better value picks further down the odds board. But is it safe to bet against McIlroy? His first Euro Tour win took place in Dubai a decade ago and he’s shined in this tournament with wins in 2012 and 2015. He’s made nine starts here with seven top-10s. The other two were a T11 and T20, so you can say he’s comfortable playing this layout. Oh, and don’t forget what he’s done recently. Two wins in his last six starts has him tracking down the World No. 1.
Danny Willett +4050
A familiar track where he’s had plenty of success could be just what Willett needs to snap out of a recent malaise. He is the defending champion carding an 18-under and winning by two swings last year, and he also had a top-5 in 2015. We know he has the goods and Dubai has nice memories. He won the Dubai Desert Classic a few years back before donning the green jacket at the Masters. Recent form is nothing special, which is why he can be bought at a good price, but I’ll take a gamble and hope he finds his groove.
Bernd Wiesberger +2550
With the Race to Dubai title within his grasp this is no time for Wiesberger to go soft. He reached the pinnacle with a solid year that included three wins and an additional four top-10s.There was some concern with back-to-back T49s following his Italian Open title, but the Austrian appeared to right the ship last week with a T3 at the Nedbank Challenge. A T4 on this track a few years ago suggests Wiesberger can cap the season in impressive style.
Marcus Kinhult +6000
The British Masters title a few months ago kind of came out of nowhere. Kinhult struggled before the win and again after, but his game has leveled off over the last few months and he comes in riding a nice run of form. He went T18-T11-T17 in three events before nearly capturing the title at the Nedbank Challenge and settling for second after falling in a playoff. If anything Kinhult should feel good about his game, and so do I at this price.
Patrick Reed +1550
Reed has been a model of consistency in recent events and at this tournament making him a worthwhile investment. In three starts on the Earth Course he hasn’t finished outside the top-10 with last year’s runner-up showing punctuated by a 16-under. A remarkable stretch of golf is bound to end soon, but I said that a few weeks ago and it has yet to happen. Reed’s been among the top-25 in 13 of his last 14 starts with the last two a T10 at the WGC HSBC Champions and T8 in the Turkish Airlines Open.
Course: Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates - 7,675-yards, Par-72
For the 11th straight the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates will host event, and we’ve seen low scores in the past with nine of the 10 winners scoring 16-under or better with four into the -20s. It stretches to nearly 7,700 yards and forgiving fairways play well to big hitters. There are also large greens that help plenty of shots. The entire layout offers a variety of intriguing holes and requires every stick in the bag. The course is known for its finishing stretch with a birdie opportunity on 15 and the island green on 17 that calls for an accurate iron shot. And the 18th asks golfers to play with a water hazard that runs the entire length of the hole.
