The European Tour season is winding down with the first of three final Rolex Series events getting underway this week at Montgomerie Maxx Royal Golf Club for the playing of the Turkish Airlines Open. Race to Dubai points leader Bernd Wiesberger will look to pad his lead in the standings, however the Austrian is down the oddsboard. Two-time defending champion Justin Rose opened as the betting favorite at offshore sportsbooks with Patrick Reed close behind. If Rose is to hit the trifecta he’ll have to pull it off at a different venue. The previous three editions were contested at Regnum Carya Golf Club. Odds Analysis
Patrick Reed +1000
He’s either going to win a tournament or fall flat on his face. I’m betting on the former since he’s been so good for a long stretch. And of course he knows how to win, he’s not Tony Finau. His close last week made me rethink picking him and the odds are good enough to make an investment. Following a 72 last Thursday, Reed responded with two 69s and a 66 to grab a share of eighth at Sheshan. It was his 11th top-25 and fifth top-10 in his last 13 starts. He’s making his tournament and course debut, but at this point I don’t think anything can slow down Reed.
Tyrrell Hatton +1600
Hatton is another player knocking at victories door and coming off a strong finish last week. He closed with a 68-65 for T14 and his form was solid heading into the WGC event. His previous three starts in succession produced a T15 at the Alfred Dunhill Links, T18 at the Italian Open and T6 at the CJ Cup. He’s also experienced a few go-rounds on this layout with a T19 and T26 while capturing a pair of top-20s the last two years.
Matthias Schwab +2800
An up-and-comer on the Tour, you better gobble up Schwab at this price because he probably won’t have so much value in future events. He closed with a 66 in China to grab a share of fourth and has risen to No. 102 in the OWGR. He placed among the top-10 in five of his last eight starts with four of those doubling as top-5s. He’s gone T4-MC-T4 in his last three starts with a second round 78 dooming him in Italy. Otherwise, Schwab has been on fire.
Danny Willett +3300
This seems like a good event for Willett and to see him at that price I couldn’t resist. The former Masters champ had a lull in his game after donning the green jacket, but a recent resurgence has piqued my curiosity. Willett hoisted the trophy at the BMW PGA Championship a few months back and he captured the DP World Tour Championship last year, so he’s getting greased up for a defense. And unlike a lot of players he has experience at Maxx Royal with a T11 and T4 the last two times here.
Thomas Pieters +3300
He didn’t play last week, which tells me Pieters is getting rested up for the closing haul. He struggled over the summer, but regained his form recently and has made nine straight cuts. That won’t be a problem this week, but he is swinging better. Pieters won the Czech Masters and has just one other top-10 in the last nine starts. I’m counting on course experience moving him up the leaderboard. Pieters was T26 on this track in 2015 and placed among the top-20 the last two tournaments.

After a three-year hiatus at Carya, the Turkish Airlines Open returns to its roots for the first time since 2015. As the name suggests, Colin Montgomerie had a hand in the design of the layout, which stretches to over 7,100 yards at par 72. It’s certainly not an imposing track as past numbers can attest. Victor Dubuisson won the inaugural event at -24 and followed two years later with a -22 victory. The setup allows for lower scores with three par 4s on the back nine measuring less than 395 yards. There are few hazards and the trees frame holes instead of interfering with play. The greens are large and undulating so having the flat stick working will certainly be a bonus. The course is aesthetically pleasing and rather easy for professional golfers.
