The Montgomerie Maxx Royal Golf Club in Antalya hosts the Turkish Airlines Open this week in the first of the final three Rolex Series events to close out the European Tour season. Two-time defending champion Justin Rose opened as the betting favorite, but those titles came up the road at Regnum Carya Golf Club. The event returns to its original venue where it played from 2013-2015. Race to Dubai points are up for grabs with standings leader Bernd Wiesberger looking to add to his total after a disappointing result at the WGC event last week. Need to Know
After playing the last three tournaments at Regnum Carya, the Turkish Airlines Open returns to its original host. Montgomerie Maxx Royal Golf Club is a short par 72 with few hazards, and we’ve seen low scores here in the past. The inaugural 2013 event was won by Victor Dubuisson at 24-under. The Frenchman returned the favor two years later at 22-under. We also had low scores at Carya, so maybe it’s something in the water. As the name of the course indicates, design features were inspired by Colin Montgomerie. And I hope he was looking for a resort style because that’s exactly what he got. The track stretches to 7,132 yards and has stunning beauty. However, there is little in terms of difficulty for the pros. The greens are large and trees along the fairways don’t interfere with play. With three par 4s on the back nine measuring less than 395 yards, the setup allows for low scores and that’s likely what we are going to get.
Turkish Airlines Open Matchup Picks
Kiradech Aphibarnrat +115 vs. Paul Waring
Sometimes you just have to take a chance, after all that’s what betting is about if you want to cash in big. Well, I’m taking a chance on Aphibarnrat just because he’s never finished outside the top-25 in four tournament starts, two of which came at Maxx Royal, including a T3 in 2015. He hasn’t had the best season coming in, but Aphibarnrat looked to have things straightened out his last start, which ended with a T8 at the CJ Cup. Finding his swing at a place he does well adds up to a matchup pick for me.
Danny Willett -115 vs. Robert MacIntyre
Another player who regained form and has past success on this track is Willett, who I am backing in this matchup. The 2016 Masters champ went on hiatus after slipping on the green jacket, but a resurgence over the last year moved Willett back into the top-30 with inspired golf. He won the BMW PGA Championship a few months ago and is preparing to defend his DP World Tour Championship title in a few weeks. Unlike a number of players he has experience at Maxx Royal with a T11 and T4 the last two times here.
Thomas Pieters -120 vs. Eddie Pepperell
I’m not convinced Pieters has overcome his summer woes to win this weekend, but I like that he’s playing much better and I give him the edge in this matchup. This course will help the big-hitting Belgian since it isn’t penal if you stray off the tee. And Pieters has regained some confidence with nine consecutive made cuts. Included among them was a win at the Czech Masters with three additional top-20s. He has experience on this track with a T26 in 2015, along with top-20s the last two years.
Bernd Wiesberger -130 vs. Haotong Li
Getting back on the Euro Tour is a blessing for Wiesberger, who just hasn’t been able to translate the success to the PGA side. He stumbled again at last week’s WGC event but he was probably looking at his Race to Dubai points lead and what he has to do to maintain it over the next few weeks. The Austrian has no problem tearing up this circuit with three wins this season and a strong finish will put him in a good spot.
Victor Perez -120 vs. Christiaan Bezuidenhout
Perez has been on a heater and I like him to continue his torrid play in this matchup. He came out of nowhere to win the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, followed that with a T57 in the Italian Open, T16 in France, and another impressive outing last week with a T4 in his WGC debut. There’s something about this time of year for the Frenchman with all three victories, including two on the Challenge Tour, coming in autumn months.
