Odds Analysis

Tommy Fleetwood +1025

We don’t see a lot of three-peat winners on the Tour and we’ve never seen one here for a reason – it’s just hard to do. Sure Fleetwood is hot and he cashed the big check the last two years, but three in a row is asking a lot. There is added incentive for Fleetwood with the prize pool more than doubled from last year, and you can’t argue the Englishman’s form. But again, winning three in a row is difficult and the additional prize money has attracted some talented golfers. It wouldn’t be a complete surprise to see Fleetwood at the podium on Sunday, but I’m not betting on it.

Thomas Pieters +2050

If you can count on the good Pieters showing up he would be worth taking a chance on. But that’s a leap of faith for a player known more for snapping his sticks in half rather than swinging them with a chance at victory. He is talented and placed fifth here last year with a final round 72 costing him a bigger payday. He also took second in 2016 and fourth in 2015. But in between he missed the cut making it hard to predict what he’s going to do this week.

Brooks Koepka +1050

He hasn’t played here since 2014 but with a status upgrade, Koepka had this event circled on his calendar and he used the TOC in Hawai’i as a tune up. Koepka had a terrific 2018 with Major wins at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship and he hoisted the hardware at the CJ Cup back in October just before breaking for the Holidays. He scraped off some rust from a two month rest at the TOC ending that event with a 69 and he’s primed for a big finish in the UAE.

Bernd Wiesberger +11500

I typically don’t go this far down the odds list to analyze a player’s chances, but Wiesberger is an intriguing subject. He was an up and comer on the Tour until a wrist injury derailed him for close to seven months. Once ranked No. 23 in the world and a four-time winner on the European Tour, Wiesberger made three starts at the end of 2018, improving in each. He also spent time in Abu Dhabi ahead of this event to prepare and he could be worth some spare change with a hefty payout if he’s caught up.

Course: Abu Dhabi Golf Club – 7,600-yards, par-72

The course has a sparkling reputation for being one of the best manicured on the Tour, but it also has an abundance of hazards that can make for an exciting finish. There are seven lakes that surround the layout and water comes into play on over half the holes. The fairways are forgiving, but deceivingly narrow and the rough is thick, which can make for interesting shots. Overall the course plays to a variety of styles with none more important than the others. Sacrificing distance for accuracy isn’t an option given the length, but it is important to avoid the hazards and the thick stuff. The good news is that the weather should cooperate, though we could see winds pick up later in the week.
