The European Tour has also been affected with the second major of the PGA circuit on tap next week. Many players use the week before to reenergize and the Betfred British Masters will be minus some big names. However, with the help of the best British golfers, the event has had a renaissance since it was revived in 2015. Brits sit atop the odds board with tournament host Tommy Fleetwood the betting favorite. He’s followed by Tyrrell Hatton, Matt Wallace and defending champ Eddie Pepperell. There are some enticing matchups for the event that begins on Thursday from the Hillside Golf Club.

Need To Know
In an attempt to reinvigorate the British Masters, the event has moved to different locations since returning to the schedule in 2015. The Hillside Golf Club will host for the first time and do it this month as opposed to later in the year after the schedule was manipulated. Founded in 1911, Hillside has hosted a number tournaments but this will be the first European Tour event at the course since 1982. It’s a classic links style layout with dunes and elevated tees that stretches to just under 7,000 yards. And at par-72 should produce low scores. The back nine is considered to be the best in Britain and just about every golfer to play that stretch raves about it. There is no course form to consider, but previous links form will be a huge advantage.
Betfred British Masters Matchup Picks
Bernd Wiesberger +100 vs. Richard Sterne
Things could finally be coming together for Wiesberger, who we expected to be in the running last week with his game taking shape. A rising star on the Euro Tour in 2017, the comeback has been slow, but last week he earned his first top-20 in 18 months. Following a MC in Malayasia, Wiesberger was T23 in India and T14 in China. Previous links form is encouraging with a playoff loss in the Irish Open and T5 in the Dunhill Links.
Eddie Pepperell +195 vs. Tommy Fleetwood
This is a leap on a big underdog, but it doesn’t come without validation. Previous hosts have struggled in this event with all the external factors in play, and competing in his backyard isn’t going to do Fleetwood any favors. Sure, he’s the betting favorite by a wide margin, but considering the demanding week and still having to play golf, there’s a reason why no host has ever emerged victorious. Besides, Pepperell is the defending champ and he’s a helluva links player. The Hillside layout better fits his game than when he won at Walton Heath.
Matt Wallace -110 vs. Lee Westwood
This matchup poses many problems simply because both players have struggled on the links-style layouts. Westwood has accomplished plenty over his career as he searches for his 25th Euro Tour victory. However, he’s been stronger on the Scottish links than the English links with no top-25s in his last 10 starts at England’s Golf Coast. Unlike Fleetwood, Wallace won’t have the additional duties of hosting, and playing the game in front of the home crowd should be enough to get the head-to-head victory.
Callum Shinkwin +100 vs. Maximilian Kieffer
Riding a run of hot form since losing a playoff in the Scottish Open at Dondonald Links, Shinkwin is my pick by a narrow margin in this matchup. He was T10 at the Handa Vic Open and T6 at the Hero Open, and his links form is solid. He was sluggish in his last start in Morocco, but a return to home soil has Shinkwin getting the better of his matchup partner.
