Some normalcy returns to the European Tour this week with a stop in Germany for the 31st playing of the BMW International Open. The event has alternated annually between two venues since 2011 and will take place at Golfclub Munchen Eichenried in Munich. Matt Wallace is back to defend his title, though last year’s victory was accomplished on a different layout. And the field has a number of players making the trip from California after competing in the U.S. Open, creating a strong lineup and enticing matchup odds at BookMaker.eu.

Need to Know
Opened in 1989 Golfclub Munchen Eichenried is still a relatively new course. But the track underwent a huge transformation since the last Euro Tour visit in 2017. And we’re not talking about a few holes. We’re talking about the entire course. The surfaces of all 18 greens changed with some slope added. The layout is straightforward with mature trees lining the generous fairways to provide a little opposition off the tee. The four par-5s are all reachable in two shots providing scoring opportunities. The most challenging stretch is the closing three holes. The 16th green is guarded by water on three sides and the par-3 17th awards a new BMW automobile to the first player with a hole-in-one. The par-5 18th is probably the toughest with a sharp dogleg leading to the green. A 20-under par score at Eichenried would have put you in the top-10 back in the day. Players would gladly accept that score this week.
BMW International Open Matchup Picks
Thomas Detry +109 vs. Jordan L Smith
He might be a bit of a sleeper pick in this matchup, but I like Detry and his positive odds against a hot competitor. Detry has been consistently unspectacular this season, making cuts but underwhelming on the weekend. He has four top-20s but a T9 in the Trophee Hassan II is his highest finish. What got may attention was his debut on this course two years ago. Detry praised the layout and closed with a 66 to finish second by a shot. In five events prior he had three MCs with a best of 48. Afterwards was a pair of MCs in three events. Yeh, I’ll say he has fond memories of Eichenried.
Joost Luiten +100 vs. Rafael Cabrera Bello
There’s no denying Rafa has the talent. He’s been a top play on the Euro circuit since the desert swing. However, since taking third at Bay Hill he’s had just one finish inside the top-30 in stroke play, that being a T16. For Luiten, he needs to stay away from the PGA Tour stops. He’s coming off a T64 at the PGA Championship and T62 at the Memorial, but he does have five finishes of T12 or better on the Euro Tour, where he continues to thrive. He also has a fine record at Eichenried, and that’s pushing me his way in this matchup.
Romain Langasque -127 vs. Paul Dunne
A former amateur star, Langasque is worth keeping an eye on this week. He won on the Challenge Tour last September and has been close on the Euro Tour with a T2 in South Africa, T6 in Kenya and most recently solo third in the Made in Denmark. Langasque was T31 here as a rookie in 2017, but he’s a more confident player this time around.
Matt Wallace +120 vs. Sergio Garcia
This is an interesting matchup and the odds are wild. It’s hard to imagine Garcia with such a steep price, especially considering his recent form. And Wallace is the defending champ, though on a different track, and has been striking the ball well. Garcia missed two cuts before reaching the weekend at Pebble Beach. However, rounds of 75 and 74 saw him tumble down the leaderboard. Wallace was T12 at the U.S. Open and probably should have won the British Masters. He’s played well recently and I’ll give him the edge.
