European Tour Picks – ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth Matchup Odds

European Tour Picks

A unique twist on this week’s European Tour stop also throws a wrinkle at bettors looking to cash in on matchup wagering. The ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth is a combination of stroke play and match play with the first 54 holes determining the 24 players that will compete on Sunday. The twist is that the final day will consist of five rounds of six-hole match play. Therefore, the betting matchups will take place over the first three rounds of stroke play at the Lake Karrinyup Country Club in Perth, Australia. A new champion will be crowned with Kiradech Aphibarnrat not competing, leaving Thomas Pieters as the betting favorite at +1400. Here is a look at the odds for the matchups contested over the first 54 holes.

Need to Know

Only the top 24 players make it to the knockout round and the best eight get a first-round bye in Sunday’s match play, so everyone needs to be on their best behavior. There are two cuts with the first coming after 36 holes. A poor round on one of the first two days will doom anyone, but match play experience is a key for those that make it to the final day. The layout at Lake Karrinyup is hilly but plays rather short at around 7,150 yards. With obstructed views of the greens from the tee box, it’s definitely a second-shot course. The greens have been described as undulating and firm and there are tricky run off areas. The tree-lined fairways offer some resistance as do a number of bunkers that surround the greens. Accuracy off the tee and strong approach play are necessary. Weather shouldn’t be a factor, but wind has been known to gust without notice, so beware.

ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth Matchup Picks

Lucas Herbert -120 vs. Ryan Fox

These two endured the same agony last week at the Vic Open when the wind turned promising starts into a wasted weekend. They were tied for ninth after 36 holes before each tapped out with a 76 in the third. Herbert has enjoyed success at this event reaching the knockout round in both years since the format change. A semifinalist last year, Herbert lost to eventual champion Aphibarnrat on the shootout hole, despite having a lower stroke play score over six holes. That finish helped Herbert to a strong season that saw him rise to No. 47 in the world rankings. That ending 12 months ago still gnaws at him and will be his motivation for taking down Fox in this matchup.

Jazz Janewattananond +123 vs. Wade Ormsby

Ormsby cleared his matchup partner by 10 swings at last week’s Vic Open, which is why he’s a big favorite this week. We faded Janewattananond last week because of his limited experience down under. Well, he gained some valuable strokes last week and had a decent showing with a T27. A final round 75 took him down a few spots on the leaderboard and that’s something Jazz looks to improve on this week. And there’s no denying he’s playing well right now. He had a run of four straight top-5 finishes with a victory at the Singapore Open and his strength is tee-to-green accuracy and putting, which goes well on this layout.

Tom Lewis +106 vs. Thomas Pieters

Pieters is the betting favorite in a watered down field and his last start at Lake Karrinyup didn’t go so well with a MC. He has match play experience with a successful Ryder Cup showing a few years ago, but his game has been sliding since, as has his world ranking. While Pieters has lacked good form, Lewis has been the exact opposite. He has nine top-15 showings in 11 starts on the Euro and Challenge Tours since September and took third his last time out at the Saudi International.
