The European Tour is back in action this week for the Made in Denmark. The tournament returns to its roots at Himmerland Golf and Spa Resort, where it was held for four years before moving for the 2018 playing. The event also has a new time slot moving from its usual August start. The Danish duo of Lucas Bjerregaard and Thorbjorn Olesen return to their homeland after taking part in last week’s PGA Championship while defending champion Matt Wallace is coming off his best finish at a major. Wallace is the betting favorite and the three are included in a number of matchups with odds for those listed below.

Need to Know
Players can smack the ball all over the Himmerland layout, but if the flat stick isn’t working they’re probably not making it to the weekend. The tournament returns to a familiar site after playing last year at Silkeborg with Wallace prevailing in a four-man playoff. There are differences between the two courses with Himmerland having more of a links feel to it being exposed with undulating greens. Playing at less than 7,000 yards, Himmerland isn’t long, but it does require every skill to enjoy success. There are four par-3s with the 16th being the signature hole. Known as Himmerland Hill, the steep banks surrounding the green allow spectators to get an up close view of the proceedings. It’s a manageable hole in a stretch of three where players have a chance to make up ground.
Made in Denmark Matchup Picks
Lee Westwood +100 vs. Thorbjorn Olesen
Neither player has been in top form lately, but at least Westwood can place the blame on inactivity. He teed off for the first time in six weeks at the British Masters grabbing a T35 and followed that with a MC at Bethpage. He put up a fight at last year’s tournament and probably should be the defending champ if not for a late stumble. He then lost to Wallace in a playoff. I think he just needed a few reps to chisel off the rust and is a good play in this matchup.
Thomas Detry -130 vs. Alexander Bjork
A rising star on the Euro circuit, it looks like just a matter of time before Detry breaks through at this level. He’s been a winner on the Challenge Tour and placed T14 in his only Himmerland start in 2017. Recent form has been inviting as well with three top-15s among his last four finished events. Putting always factors in on this layout and Detry’s flat stick has been one of the best. His ball-striking and putting should put him in a position to win this matchup and contend for a title.
Erik Van Rooyen +100 vs. Lucas Bjerregaard
This sets up as an intriguing matchup. Van Rooyen is making his course debut while Bjerregaard is a track vet who hasn’t enjoyed much success. I have to give the edge to EVR based on his solid form and not having to worry about performing in front of the crowd. EVR just had his best finish in a major with a T8 at the PGA Championship and shouldn’t have a problem with this layout after navigating around Bethpage.
Matt Wallace -135 vs. Thomas Pieters
It’s hard to look away from Wallace after what he’s accomplished lately. He battled the field last week at Bethpage to a T3, finishing as the top Euro circuit player. His strong play that included a runner-up at the British Masters and a T6 at Bay Hill made him the betting favorite in this matchup. He’s also the defending champ after a late run at Silkeborg last year and he was T6 in his only start at Himmerland.
