You can always tell the importance of a tournament by the quality of the players. That’s the case this week with a star-studded field off to Surrey, England, for the European Tour’s BMW PGA Championship. Only 10 tournaments remain in the Race to Dubai with half of them being Rolex Series events. This prestigious competition kicks things off with recently crowned PGA Tour Player of the Year Rory McIlroy the betting favorite at online sportsbooks. Odds Analysis
Rory McIlroy +550
Easily the class of the field, but his price gives me doubts considering the number of strong players. However, it’s hard to look away from a player who dominated a number of events and was tabbed PGA Tour Player of the Year recently edging out Brooks Koepka. Just a week after wrapping up the FedExCup title with a win at the Tour Championship, McIlroy was runner-up at Crans. He hasn’t played since, but he does have an affinity for Wentworth with a win in 2014 and second last year. There are better value picks, but you can’t go wrong with Rory.

Casey is a two-time winner at Wentworth taking the title at this event in 2009. After leaving this tournament off his schedule for five years he returned in 2018 with a top-20. He heads to one of his favorite venues on a stretch of solid play with a solo fifth at the Tour Championship and a win at the European Open. “Obviously, Wentworth is one of my favorite golf courses and I have such fantastic memories there,” he said.

We haven’t seen much of Lowry since winning The Open at Royal Portrush in July. He’s started just twice since then and wasn’t a factor in either tournament. Wentworth is also tops on his list of venues for obvious reasons. He’s never won here, but he’s been close. Lowry finished among the top-15 six times in his last eight starts at Wentworth with four of those putting him in the top-six. He was runner-up to McIlroy in 2014. “If I go there with my game in decent shape, I know I can perform at Wentworth and I feel it’s a tournament I can do well in.”
Viktor Hovland +2650
We don’t often see players let alone rookies perform as consistently as Hovland has. Four more sub-70 rounds at The Greenbrier last week gave the Norwegian a record-tying run of 17 consecutive such rounds and produced a T10 finish. He’s risen to No. 101 in the OWGR since turning pro in June and it doesn’t look like he’s ready to stop there.

The Englishman dropped off the radar missing time due to injury, but he returns to the scene of his biggest win and has picked up some steam in recent months. Wood toppled the field in 2016 after a fourth-place showing the year before. He also has a T6 on his resume from 2010. Definitely a course fanatic, but with a stronger field than he’s seen in the past I’m not all in. I’ll drop a few bucks with hopes of large payday, though.
Course: Wentworth Golf Club – 7,284 yards, Par 72
One of three 18-hole courses at the Wentworth Club, the West Course has hosted every edition of this event since 1984. At just under 7,300 yards, the layout isn’t difficult and is open to all types of players, as past champions have shown. Recent tweaks to the layout have made it tougher to play with additional yardage and upwards of 30 bunkers added. The fairways are tight and lined with trees which can pose a problem if accuracy is an issue. However, a number of the holes can yield birdies and players can make up strokes on the final two holes, which are manageable par-5s. Hitting greens in regulation is a proven stat with eight of the last 10 winners ranking among the best in the field.
