A staple on the European Tour since 1972, the KLM Open takes place this week with the field breaking in a new course. The International in Amsterdam will host a strong field, however a number of top players have elected to sit in preparation for bigger events upcoming on the schedule. American Patrick Reed opened as the betting favorite at top offshore sportsbooks, however, odds suggest the field is wide open. Odds Analysis
Patrick Reed +860
It’s hard to decipher where Reed is mentally. If he’s all in he has a good chance of toppling the field, and he showed signs of coming around by winning The Northern Trust, securing T19 at the BMW Championship and T9 at the Tour Championship during the FedExCup playoffs. He finished T23 or better in each of his last eight starts on the PGA Tour, however he was never in contention at last week’s Porsche European Open ending at +1 and T36. It almost seems like this is a vacation for him, which makes me doubt backing him as the favorite.
Joost Luiten +1600
Luiten doesn’t miss the chance to compete in his home Open and he’s been successful in the past. He won the event in 2016 at The Dutch and in 2013 at Kennemer, and if anyone in the field is familiar with The International layout and its intricacies, Luiten is the guy. He also has three additional top-6 finishes in his 13 tournament starts. He hasn’t finished among the top-10 since May, but he’s trending in the right direction going T32-T29-T23 in his last three outings.
Martin Kaymer +1600
It’s hard to overlook a past major winner and former world No. 1, so I’m taking a hard look at Kaymer. He’s been a beast on the Euro circuit with 11 career victories, and he’s had some promising starts this season. He had a podium finish at the Memorial, was T8 at the British Masters and had three other top-20s. We haven’t seen him since a MC at the Wyndham Championship, but back in Europe at a tournament he won in 2010 is enough to give some consideration.
Gavin Green +2800
If Green can go the distance he offers a nice payout to those throwing down on him. A quiet run of nice form has gotten him close with seven of his last 11 starts ending with a top-20. He can do more and a breakthrough appears imminent. Green had the 18-hole lead in Prague, was T6 after 36 holes at the Scandinavian Invite and T3 after three rounds of the European Masters.
Romain Wattel +7000
It’s always good to look further down the odds board when the field has openings. Wattel offers a hefty payout at his odds and he enters after destroying Green Eagle over the final 36 holes last week. Shooting 67-64 to grab T6 wasn’t entirely unexpected from the Frenchman after a pair of top-20s at the Czech Masters and Scottish Open. He’s been a feast or famine player at this event and over the course of the season, so here’s hoping the strong play from the European Open continues.
Course: The International – 6,966 yards, Par 73
This event was previously held at Kennemar Golf and Country Club from 2006 to 2009 and again from 2013 to 2015. The last three editions took place at The Dutch with The International assuming hosting duties for the first time this year. A new course always presents challenges and there are plenty. The length doesn’t figure to be much of an issue with the track measuring just under 7,000 yards. However, drastic changes from hole to hole require the field to be at the top of their game. The natural terrain of the layout provides height differences and a number of holes have challenging water hazards. While the length may not be a problem, the water and sand certainly will be.
