The Scandinavian Invitation is new to the European Tour in name only, and a full-field of golfers will assemble for a second straight year at Hills Golf and Sports Club in Gothenburg, Sweden, to battle for the title. Local hero Henrik Stenson bypassed the FedExCup Playoffs to participate in his national open and opened as the betting favorite at top online sportsbooks. Fellow Swede and two-time winner of the previously named Nordea Masters Alex Noren will peg it up, as will defending champ Paul Waring. Odds Analysis
Henrik Stenson +795
Hopefully Stenson didn’t put too much pressure on himself. “After a busy spring and summer, the choice was the FedExCup or the Scandinavian Invitation, and my decision now allows me to be in Sweden to practice and recharge my batteries looking ahead to the final part of the season.” Stenson will be making his 16th appearance on home soil, but he’s never played this layout. He had a run of top-10s through the summer and his accuracy off the tee should serve him well. He looks like a good fit and he wants to be here, which is why he should be in contention over the weekend.
Alex Noren +1100
It’s been a rather subdued season for Noren, but a recent surge makes him appealing at this event. He hasn’t cracked the top-10, but he’s been close the last two starts with a T11 at The Open and a T12 at the WGC St. Jude Invitational, making the timing of his return ideal. He didn’t play here last year but he won this event twice at different locations. “Winning in 2011 and 2015 was special for me and my family, so I would love to add another national open to my name this year,” Noren said.
Andrea Pavan +1800
There is no home course advantage so why not take a gander at Pavan, who’s been on fire recently. He won the BMW International in June, was T4 at the Scottish Open last month, and closed with a 65 to for a T3 at last week’s Czech Masters. Pavan had a strong finish here last year with a Sunday 64 to finish T6. There is a lot to like about his game.
Matthew Fitzpatrick +1000
He’s making his course debut, but Fitzpatrick will be a popular selection given his recent form and success in the country. The Englishman was T20 at The Open and earned a top-5 at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. He won this event in 2016 and finished runner-up when defending his title in 2017. He’s one of the most accurate off the tee, which should lead to plenty of scoring opportunities.
Haydn Porteous +5000
There is a nice payday should Porteous continue a run of strong form. He finished T11 at last week’s Czech Masters and was top-10 in a Sunshine Tour event a few weeks earlier. Hard to overlook his play at Hills last year when he got stronger as the week went on shooting 72-67-67-65 to take T6. It might be too much to ask for Porteous to top the leaderboard, but like I said, there is a nice payday should he comply.
Course: Hills Golf and Sports Club – 6,865 yards, Par 70
The Euro Tour got its first look at this layout last year and Paul Waring liked what he saw. Claiming his first Tour victory, Waring carded a 14-under and knocked off Thomas Aiken on the first sudden death playoff hole. Measuring less than 6,900 yards, it’s a short layout but not easy after a quick glance at last year’s scores. Situated in the picturesque Sandsjobacka nature reserve, there are plenty of trees, lakes and rugged terrain to counter the lack of yardage. Driving accuracy will be huge with players given plenty of chances to go low as long as they stay straight off the tee.
