The European Tour heads to China this week for the 25th playing of the Volvo China Open. The tournament gets a new host this year with the field teeing it up at the Genzon Golf Club from May 2-5. The previous three playings were at Topwin Golf and Country Club. Genzon isn’t entirely new to the Tour having hosted this event in 2014 and also entertaining the Shenzhen International from 2015-1017. With some of China’s top golfers among the field, it isn’t surprising to the see the best at the top of the odds board. Haotong Li opened as the betting favorite at +1000.

Odds Analysis
Haotong Li +1000
Not only is Li a local hero, he’s also a pretty good golfer, which is why he’s at the top of the odds board. He has another advantage over several in the field in that he didn’t compete last week so he didn’t have to make the long trek from Morocco. His last outing produced a final round 68 at Augusta to finish T43, and he’s had varying displays at Genzon. In 2015 he closed 65-67 for runner-up honors, but he missed the cut in each of the next two years. He won this event at Topwin in 2017 and recent form has been solid. Even if Li is near his best he should be a contender, and the payout is tempting for the favorite.
Jordan Smith +1600
The Englishman has quietly put together a strong season and we’re waiting for that breakout tournament. Smith grabbed the 18-hole lead in Morocco after a 66, but he faded to T14. He now has three top-15s in his last four starts. A final round 64 earned Smith a podium finish at last year’s China Open and three rounds of 69 helped him to a T14 in his only start at Genzon in 2017.
Bernd Wiesberger +5500
Carding a 16-under earned Wiesberger the title at the Shenzhen International at Genzon in 2017, and he’s hoping a return to a familiar track can help get his game back on line. A rising star on the Euro circuit before a lengthy injury put him on the shelf for most of last season, the return has been slow. The Austrian had four MCs in five starts earlier this year, but signs of regaining his form emerged with a T23 at the Indian Open in his last outing.
Jorge Campillo +1600
Can the Spaniard go back-to-back? Campillo won his first Euro title last week after 229 attempts and he has to be glowing in the excitement of that victory. And making the haul from Morocco isn’t easy. Prior to his victory, Campillo had a pair of runner-ups, a solo third and a T20, so it was just a matter of time. It’s hard to win two in a row and I’ll put my hard-earned coin on a better value pick.
David Lipsky +3000
There’s a lot to like about Lipsky’s game right now. And there’s plenty to like about his price. A two-time winner on the Asian Tour, the American has spun a solid season to date on the Euro circuit and is ninth in the Race to Dubai. He won the Alfred Dunhill Championship and was T10 at the WGC-Mexico. After two MCs, Lipsky responded with a T13 at the Maybank Championship and a top-5 last week in Morocco. He was a T5 at Genzon in his last appearance in 2017.
Course: Genzon Golf Club – 7,145 yards, Par 72
Stretched out to a modest 7,145 yards, Genzon isn’t as easy as the distance would make it appear. The greens are tricky and plenty of water is in play, especially over the final six holes. Courses in China like to make up the yard count in the par-5s, but the four at Genzon are reachable in two and, more importantly, they are scoreable. Alexander Levy won at Genzon in 2014 shooting 19-under. The last two winners of the Shenzhen International, which was played on this track, each carded a 16-under. Wind can be a factor on this layout and rain is in the forecast so we could get a softened course this week.
