The European Tour heads to Portugal this week for the Portugal Masters, with Thorbjorn Olesen the lukewarm favorite at odds of +1475. It looks to be a wide-open event, as seven players are listed at odds of less than +2000.
I am coming off a nice 4-1 week with the matchups at the KLM Open. Let’s look at the odds and matchups for this week’s Portugal Masters.

Portugal Masters Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. We know one thing about Dom Pedro Victoria, it produces low scores. Ever since the tournament started in 2007 the players have lit up this course. The winning score in 2007 was 25-under and the winner score figures to be 20-under or better again this year. This course favors long hitters who happen to get hot with the putter.
Shane Lowry -120 vs. Eddie Pepperell
I know that Pepperell is playing well but this course really doesn’t suit his game. Pepperell is just 255th on the European Tour in driving distance while Lowry is 92nd and Lowry won this event in 2012. I will take Lowy in this matchup.
Hideto Tanihara -130 vs. Nacho Elvira
I did well with Tanihara last week and I am coming right back with him again this week. He finished in a tie for 3rd in last week’s KLM Open and I see no reason he can’t contend again this week. Elvira missed the cut last week, but he has played this course well in the past. This play is simply riding with the hot hand and going with Tanihara.
Danny Willett -130 vs. Jordan Smith
Willett is 58th on the European Tour in driving distance, while Smith is just 105th. He has played pretty well on this course in the past with a couple of six place ties and a tie for 7th. Smith has had a poor season and I will go against him here.
Ryan Fox -120 vs. Alexander Levy
This is a stat play, as Fox is 6th on the European Tour in driving distance, while Levy is 63rd. Levy is playing better, but I think Fox can contend this week, while Levy still may be a couple of weeks away.
Haydn Porteous -115 vs. Richard Sterne
Porteous is 36th on the European Tour in driving distance, while Sterne is 82nd. Porteous has finished in the top 40 in each of his last five events. I will lay the small price and take Porteous in this matchup.
Nicolas Colsaerts -115 vs. Lucas Herbert
When you think of long hitters, you usually think of Colsaerts. He has good memories of this course and he should outhit Herbert on a regular basis. It is always a little risky backing Cosaerts, but this course suits him and he should have a good week.
