Made in HimmerLand Golf Odds

The European Tour returns for a new but old event this week with the Made in HimmerLand. Formerly known as Made in Denmark, the tournament is back on the schedule after being shuttered in 2020 due to COVID. With it comes a name change but the same HimmerLand Golf and Spa Resort course that yielded a 1-shot victory for Bernd Wiesberger in 2019. The defending champion hit the board as the second favorite behind Robert MacIntyre as the only players with shorter than 20/1 odds. The homeland is well represented this week with Rasmus Hojgaard and Thorbjorn Olesen positioned in the upper tier of favorites. Odds Analysis

Richard Bland +5000

It’ll be interesting to see how Bland reacts after his win in the British Masters a few weeks ago when he became the Tour’s oldest first-time winner. He was dialed in at The Belfry registering just one bogey all week and he said that he felt a win was coming. He also said it could be the first of many, and as we saw at the PGA Championship with Phil Mickelson taking down the field, age is just a number. More importantly Bland had time to digest that victory and should be focused on the task at hand.

Wilco Nienaber +5000

Many feel that maiden ET victory is close for Nienaber and he enters this week off a Challenge Tour win in his native South Africa. He’s one of the biggest hitters on Tour and has a chance to gain on the field with his booming drives on a shorter than normal course. He used every stick in the bag expertly to win the Dimension Data Pro-Am a few weeks ago and shouldn’t be overwhelmed by the field since he recorded six top-20s on the ET last season.

Thorbjorn Olesen +2800

With his off-the-course issues hopefully behind him we’ve seen Olesen start to turn things around. And playing in his native country should be encouragement to keep the good times going. A run of three consecutive top-15 finishes was interrupted at the British Masters, but Olesen had strong showings on the short resort-style layouts in the Canary Islands with a T5 at Meloneras and a T12 at Golf Costa Adeje. A similar layout that yields plenty of birdies should be a welcome sight.

Eddie Pepperell +3000

Solid showings in his last two starts are a sign that Pepperell could be getting his game back in order. It wasn’t long ago that he rose to No. 32 in the world rankings only to suffer through an excruciating last season and early part of this one. He’s gotten progressively better in terms of finishing over his last three outings with a T33 and T12 to close the Canary Island swing and a T11 in the British Masters where a closing 73 ruined his chances. Still, his game is improving.

Bernd Wiesberger +1800

Wiesberger has spent a lot of time this year on the PGA Tour with mixed results. He got an early start on his travels to Denmark after missing the cut at the PGA Championship last week so he should at least be well rested for his title defense. He doesn’t post many MC’s so I expect the Austrian to be at the top of his game in an event and on a course that conjures up happy memories.

Course: HimmerLand Golf and Spa Resort – 6,751 yards, Par 71

All but one of the previous six events were played at HimmerLand, a tidy track that measures 6,751 yards at par 71. Four of the previous five winners on this course scored 13-under or better and we should see more of the same. Ironically, the top two players on the opening odds list finished 1-2 here in 2019 and they are also the highest ranked players in the OWGR. The course is short but it requires a varied skill set to be successful. Distance off the tee will put players in a good spot for low scores, but approach and putting will make the difference. The signature hole is the par-3 16th “HimmerLand Hill” that features a green set in a bowl surrounded by steep banks. If follows scoring opportunities at 14 and 15 giving players a chance to make up some ground.
