Porsche European Open Matchup Picks
Before we get to the picks there are a few things to consider. This Green Eagle course is long at 7,583 yards so short hitters are at a big disadvantage. Driving distance and Par-5 scoring are key statistics to consider this week. Players who rank in the bottom half in terms of driving are players to avoid this week. A couple of the matchups this week will focus specifically on driving distance and players to go against.
Jordan Smith -150 vs. Matthieu Pavon
The defending champion of this even is Smith and we get him at a good price against Pavon. Smith played pretty well recently at the Scottish Open and he should be primed for a good title defense. I will lay the price and take Smith in this matchup.
Adrian Otaegui +170 vs. Bryson DeChambeau
This is simply a price play, as I can’t see DeChambeau being this type of a favorite. Otaegui finished in the top five in this event a year ago and he ranked first in driving distance. DeChambeau is capable of winning, but he is also capable of flaming out. I like the big plus price on Otaegui in this matchup.
Nacho Elvira -115 vs. Lucas Bjerregaard
I think Elvira could be a surprise this week. He played well on this course a year ago and finished in a tie for 12th. He has played well in Germany in the past with a top ten at the BMW International Open. He played pretty well earlier this season in the Spanish Open. Bjerregaard has played this course and had little success with a tie for 34th in a Challenge Tour event and a missed cut last year. I will take Elvira in this matchup.
Zander Lombard +100 vs. Richie Ramsay
This is a key stat play on Lombard who ranks 72nd on the European Tour in driving distance, while Ramsay ranks just 214th. I will take Lombard in this matchup.
Nicolas Colsaerts -165 vs. Nick Cullen
When I think of bombers off the tee I always think of Colsaerts. He only ranks 70th on the European Tour this season in driving distance, but that is still much better than Cullen who ranks just 184th. This course should suit Colsaerts well, as his distance should be a nice advantage. I will lay the price and take him in this matchup against Cullen.
