The European Tour is not taking the week off even though some of their best players are in Florida for THE PLAYERS Championship. The Rocco Forte Sicilian Open gets underway on Thursday in Italy with Andy Sullivan listed as the favorite. Odds Analysis
Andy Sullivan +1200
I am not excited about taking Sullivan as a favorite. He has finished in the top 34 or better in his last five starts but he simply doesn’t win that often and at these odds I am passing.
Thorbjorn Olesen +1600
I think you can make a case that Olesen should be favored this week and not Sullivan. Olesen won this event in 2012 and he has said he really likes playing this course in Italy. His best finish this season is a tie for 9th, but I think he can win this week and we get decent odds.
Eddie Pepperell +2300
This course sets up well for Pepperell who drives the ball a long way. He is 38th this season in the Race to Dubai and he played pretty well last week in the GolfSixes. He might be worth a small play at these odds.
Andrea Pavan +2500
The oddsmakers are giving Pavan a chance to win this week so I have to pay attention. He is ranked just No. 379 in the world, but he is 39th in the Race to Dubai and he has finished tied for 21st or better in his last seven starts.
Alvaro Quiros +2800
The defending champion is definitely a threat simply because he hits the ball a long way. He is oftentimes all or nothing, as he is almost as likely to miss the cut as he is to win the tournament. That is bad news for matchups, but not that bad in terms of betting him to win.
Julien Guerrier +3200
The first of my two longshots this week is Guerrier who is playing well this season. He finished third in the Oman Open and he tied for 9th in Spain and tied for 20th in China. He tied for 8th in this event a year ago and in this weak field he could contend for the win.
Mikko Korhonen +6600
He tied for 11th in this event a year ago. He can hit the ball a long way and on this course that makes him a threat. He ranked very high last year in driving distance and total driving in this event and I can see him making a strong run this weekend.
Course: This event is played at the Verdura Golf Club which is hosting a European Tour tournament for the third time. The course is considered a “links” type of course, with rolling fairway and a lot of wind that impacts the play. It is all about hitting the ball a long way on this course and in this wind, which is why players like Alvaro Quiros have done well. The course is a par 71 that measures 7,217 yards.
