Scottish Open Golf Matchups

The first Rolex Series event since January takes place this week when the European Tour heads to the Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland for the Scottish Open. It’s a rare time in professional golf with the Euro Tour stealing the spotlight from the PGA Tour, which has its weekly competition in Illinois. Some of the game’s best are in attendance this week with a strong contingent from the United States. Jon Rahm is set to peg it up for the first time since winning the U.S. Open, the first major championship of his career. He’s touted as the betting favorite with a strong field of competitors close behind. The Scottish Open is one of the top tournaments on the circuit with a number of enticing matchups. Need to Know

To try and make The Renaissance Club more challenging the course underwent a makeover ahead of last year’s edition. The plan worked, sort of. Aaron Rai’s winning score of -11 last year was half that of 2019 champ Bernd Wiesberger, who finished 72 holes at 22-under and won in a playoff. The makeover added around 200 yards to the layout putting the Renaissance Club at 7,343 yards. It’s a straightforward links-style course that shouldn’t be overly problematic. Bunkers are carved into the property, trees are part of the landscape and the rough is up. The biggest test will come from Mother Nature, though, with winds expected to act up on the coast.

Scottish Open Matchup Picks

Xander Schauffele +127 vs. Jon Rahm

This might be a wasted pick but there aren’t many matchups where a player like Schauffele is offered at this price. Well, he is matched up with the best player in the world but I’m not sure Rahm is completely over the excitement of winning his first major. There’s always a big sigh after winning, but more so for Rahm after getting that major monkey off his back. And I just can’t get past the X-man at this price. Schauffele wasn’t that far off the pace at Torrey Pines finishing T7 for his sixth top-20 in seven starts.

Bernd Wiesberger -110 vs. Ian Poulter

If you can shoot 61 you are definitely a player. Wiesberger carded that number two years ago on this layout to claim victory, and his ball-striking has been a thing of beauty even if his recent results haven’t. Wiesberger has spent more time on the PGA Tour side recently, but he still knows how to wield a stick on the ET. He has two top-5s in his last three ET starts and should feel right at home this week.

Garrick Higgo +104 vs. Sam Burns

Higgo hasn’t played a Euro Tour event since winning the Canary Islands Championship in May, his second title in three weeks. He returns after a mixed bag on the PGA Tour where he wasn’t a factor in the U.S. Open or the PGA Championship. But he did win his first PGA tournament at Congaree in that span, so there is reason for hope.

Tommy Fleetwood -115 vs. Christiaan Bezuidenhout

Fleetwood has struggled for a few months, but he did show signs of regaining his touch with a T17 in Ireland last week. That’s just a bonus since Fleetwood is a standout on links courses and he has a bone to pick after losing here last year in a playoff. Fleetwood is competing for a spot on the Ryder Cup roster giving him even more incentive to perform at a high level.

Tyrrell Hatton -120 vs. Matthew Fitzpatrick -110

Hatton is another player who should benefit from a return to the Euro Tour and a links course. He spent the last few months on the PGA Tour with mixed results. He missed the cut last time out at the U.S. Open but racked up a pair of top-10s in three starts prior, including a T2 at the Palmetto Championship. Hit last three starts on the ET including a win in Abu Dhabi and a T6 in Saudi Arabia. This is a little different, but Hatton has proved his worth on links courses over his career.
