Scottish Open Golf Odds

The top of the odds board for this week’s Scottish Open looks like a who’s who at a major championship. Some of the best players in the world have opted to make the trip to The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland to compete in the second Rolex Series event of the season on the European Tour. Making his debut in this tournament and playing for the first time since winning the U.S. Open, Jon Rahm is positioned as the betting favorite with PGA Tour notables Xander Schauffele, Colin Morikawa, Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas all listed at 18/1 or shorter on the opening odds list. Aaron Rai is back to defend the title he won last year in a playoff with Tommy Fleetwood and is positioned further down the board. BookMaker.eu has a complete list of betting odds for the 2021 Scottish Open when you’re ready to place a wager.

Odds Analysis

Martin Kaymer +5000

I keep expecting Kaymer to breakthrough and that misplaced confidence has cost me in the past. It’s been a while since the German last tasted victory but he’s come close and continues to play at a high level most of the time. He overcame an opening 77 to stick around at the U.S. Open eventually settling for a T26. He followed that with a runner-up at the BMW Open and it looked like Kaymer was right there. It’s hard not to back the former world No. 1 and two-time major champion, especially at this price, so I’m going back to him with hopes of a better result.

Colin Morikawa +1400

I’m not sure Morikawa needs a tuneup ahead of The Open, but he’s going to give it a go. Third in the Race to Dubai standings, Morikawa is on roll heading in. He’s coming off a pair of top-5s in his last two starts and has six top-20s in his previous six individual stroke play events. The run started with a T18 at The Masters and included a second in the Memorial last month. His ball striking has been exquisite and he looks poised beyond his years, particularly over the last few months. Of all the players near the top of the odds board I think Morikawa has the best shot for an outright.

Ian Poulter +5000

Backing Poulter isn’t a stretch considering he has plenty to play for. Not only is the tournament title at stake but the Englishman is trying to make up ground in the Ryder Cup standings, and he’s running out of time. The Renaissance Club is the perfect venue for him to get back in consideration, though. He entered the final round here last year tied for second only to settle for a T6. And he was in contention in 2019 finishing T14. He’s clearly comfortable on this track and recent form has been decent enough to give me confidence in his game.

Andy Sullivan +6000

Recent form and course form are on a collision course and Sullivan is about to make bettors some money. Well, that’s the hope at least when backing the Englishman at his current price. Sullivan has three top-12 showings in his last five starts with a T5 in the BMW Open and a T6 in the British Masters his best. He should have been better at the Irish Open if not for a Saturday 73 that knocked him down a few pegs. His ball striking is solid and with a cooperating putter I can see Sullivan at least making things interesting on Sunday.

Bernd Wiesberger +4000

There is some value backing the 2019 champ. The results haven’t been there for Wiesberger, but spending more time on the PGA Tour can do that. A return to the Euro circuit and a course that he obliterated two years ago has me backing the eight-time ET winner. He has a pair of top-5s in his last three ET starts winning at HimmerLand in May with a T5 at BMW Open in his last start. It’s almost criminal not to back Wiesberger this week at his current price.

Course: The Renaissance Club – 7,343 yards, Par 71

The previous two editions of this event at the Renaissance Club saw scores differ greatly. In 2019 Wiesberger and Benjamin Hebert tamed the layout finishing 72 holes at 22-under. To make the course more challenging, officials added yardage ahead of last year’s competition with Rai’s winning scoring dropping to 11-under. The date change from July to October had something to do with the discrepancy as well. It’s back to a summer tee off so expect scores closer to the 2019 edition. There wasn’t much work done when the course was completed in 2008. It was basically carved into the existing landscape, which is typical of links-style courses in this part of the world. And like with all links courses, wind can and likely will be a factor.
