After stops in new locations the last two tournaments, the field returns to a familiar venue this week for LIV Golf Andalucia. And the homegrown hero Jon Rahm enters as the betting favorite still in search of his first LIV victory. However, another Spanish-born player with a rich history at Real Club Valderrama might have a better chance of picking up his first LIV title. While on the European Tour, Sergio Garcia played this course six times winning three events and placing inside the top 10 three other times. Talor Gooch got the better of Valderrama last year clipping co-betting favorite Bryson DeChambeau by one swing for his third win of 2023. The field assembles for the first time since Tyrrell Hatton toppled the field last month in Nashville, the sixth first-time winner this year. Need to Know
LIV Golf returns to one of the top courses in Europe this week with Real Club Valderrama laying down the red carpet. No stranger to big events, the club notably hosted the 1997 Ryder Cup, the first time the event was contested in continental Europe. It’s short by pro standards stretching out to around 7,000 yards at par 71. Valderrama hosted the Andalucia Masters on the European Tour for several years until that league severed ties with the club due to an agreement reached with LIV Golf. Of the eight tournaments played at Valderrama, Sergio Garcia was victorious three times, including back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018. In the LIV debut on the course last year, Garcia finished T10. Tree-lined fairways put an emphasis on accuracy off the tee, and the lack of distance doesn’t mean this course is a pushover. In fact, Valderrama was long considered one of the tougher courses on the European Tour when it was in the rotation.
LIV Golf Andalucia Matchup Picks
Jon Rahm -105 vs. Bryson DeChambeau
Rahm has been more consistent than his opponent this season finishing among the top 10 in every LIV event he completed. He has yet to deliver a victory, though, something DeChambeau did twice last year and also last month at the US Open. He might not win but banking a top 10 is nearly automatic for Rahm giving him an advantage. And any injury concerns were squelched with Rahm’s T3 finish in Nashville where he was tied with DeChambeau.
Dustin Johnson +100 vs. Thomas Pieters
I don’t remember every having to scroll to the bottom of the leaderboard to find where Johnson finished. I had to do that for LIV Golf Nashville, though. DJ crapped the bed at The Grove with only one player collecting a worse score. He might be getting too comfortable raking in all kinds of cash with three career LIV wins, including one in Las Vegas earlier this year. Being a competitor that result in Nashville had to sting so I expect a complete reversal from DJ.
Louis Oosthuizen -129 vs. Cameron Smith
With his sweet swing Oostuhizen has the ability to take Valderrama apart. He got progressively better in his rounds last year finishing with a share of 23rd, but I could make the argument that he enters this week with his game in a much better place. During a five-start stretch worldwide earlier this year, Oosthuizen finished as runner-up three times And any issues following his WD in Houston were alleviated when he finished 13th last time out in Nashville.
Abraham Ancer -129 vs. Sebastian Munoz
A run of solid form and a game suited for the Valderrama puts Ancer in a good position. Over his last seven LIV starts he has a win in Hong Kong and an additional three top 10s. And he hasn’t finished outside the top 25 in that span. The odds are steep but I like Ancer and what he’s capable of.
Talor Gooch -110 vs. Carlos Ortiz
Gooch set the bar high last year when he became the first to go back-to-back and won three times in a five-tournament stretch. One of those wins came at Valderrama when Gooch was 10-under over the last 36 holes edging DeChambeau by a single shot. He hasn’t come close to matching that heater, but he hasn’t been bad collecting four top 10s this season.
