We knew it was going to happen sooner rather than later and it finally did last time out in the UK. Jon Rahm secured his first LIV title continuing a trend that’s seen eight first-time winners in 11 tournaments this year. The season continues with the penultimate individual event with the field headed to West Virginia for LIV Golf Greenbrier. Despite his late meltdown at the Olympics, Rahm tops the odds board ahead of defending champion Bryson DeChambeau, who put on a display of golf rarely seen to win by six shots last year. He closed with a LIV record 58, also matching the lowest 18-hole score in any leading pro tour. Season points leader Joaquin Niemann is even with DeChambeau on the early golf betting odds with Tyrrell Hatton the fourth favorite. All have odds shorter than 10/1. Odds Analysis
Bryson DeChambeau +800
Backing the defending champ simply because he’s the defending champ isn’t always a bold strategy. But what DeChambeau did last year was historic and on a course you wouldn’t think he could destroy. Not only was his closing 58 a LIV record, he preceded that with a 61 and finished 23-under. It was the first of his two LIV victories that came in a span of three tournaments. The reigning US Open champ is playing well leading up to this week with three straight top 11s.
Kevin Na +7500
It’s been a struggle for Na since joining LIV, but every once in a while we see a glimpse of what he’s capable of. He closed with a 64 in Hong Kong for a T6, his best finish so far this season. He also finished T7 in Singapore a few months ago. He’s had success at The Greenbrier winning one of his five PGA Tour titles here in 2018 while recording two additional top 15s. We’ve seen some unexpected winners and this would qualify.
Louis Oosthuizen +1800
There have been a number of first-time winners this year with Oosthuizen one of the more likely players to continue that trend. He has a pair of runner-up showings with two additional top 10s, including in his last two starts where he was T4 at Andalucia and T6 in the UK. He’s been consistent all season and that’s about to get rewarded.
Patrick Reed +2800
With all the debut winners this year we could say Reed is among the best LIV players yet to claim a victory. What makes him an intriguing pick is that Old White appears to be a natural fit for his game. It’s not a long course and it requires precision ball-striking, which when he’s on are major parts of Reed’s game. He’s had some good results this year with seven top 15s worldwide and he placed among the top 5 in two of his previous three LIV starts before a T27 in the UK.
Matthew Wolff +2800
Wolff began his LIV career with a bang finishing as co-runner-up in his just his second start. This year, though, has been his best overall with six top 20s in his 10 completed starts with three of those putting him in the top 6. There is no denying his talent and he appears destined to win a title at some point, and I’m betting that it’s this week.
Course: The Greenbrier (Old White) – 7,299 yards, par 70
Four courses span the property at The Greenbrier, a luxury resort located in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia. LIV will tee it up on the Old White Course, which according to their website measures 7,299 yards at par 70. That’s not long but numerous hazards make up for the lack of distance by increasing the level of difficulty. The Greenbrier has hosted several major events, including the 1979 Ryder Cup, which was the first contested under the current USA vs. Europe format. Between 2010 and 2019 The Greenbrier hosted the PGA Tour’s Greenbrier Classic, which in its last playing saw Joaquin Niemann post a tournament record six-shot victory. Current LIV golfers Danny Lee and Kevin Na also won the Greenbrier Classic.
