After a few weeks of inactivity, LIV golf is back in action in the mountains of West Virginia for LIV Golf Greenbrier. Not all golfers were enjoying time away from the game, though. Several LIV players competed in the Olympics where it looked like Jon Rahm was headed to the top of the podium until a late crash left him out of medal contention altogether. Rahm looks to make up for that snafu by becoming the first back-to-back winner this season. Rahm has finished among the top 10 in every completed start earning his victory last time out in the UK making him the outright betting favorite. Rahm is the eighth first time winner in 11 events. Bryson DeChambeau had a tournament players dream about winning by six shots at The Greenbrier last year. He followed a 61 with a closing 58 finishing 23-under. And remember that’s only three rounds of golf. Joaquin Niemann and Tyrrell Hatton are also atop the outright odds board boasting odds shorter than 10/1. Need to Know
The Old White course at The Greenbrier is one of four nestled on the 11,000-acre property and is primarily used for championship tournaments. The venue is no stranger to major events hosting the 1979 Ryder Cup, the 1994 Solheim Cup and a PGA Tour stop from 2010 to 2019. The LIV Golf website lists the course at 7,299 yards and par 70, though I’ve seen other numbers at different sites. Either way the course is short by pro standards but hazards are lurking so it isn’t a typical resort layout. Tree-lined fairways can obstruct drives and greens are well defended putting an emphasis on accuracy. In the final PGA Tour event at The Greenbrier Niemann carded the second-lowest winning score at 21-under for a record six shot victory. Current LIV players Danny Lee (2015) and Kevin Na (2018) also won the event
LIV Golf Greenbrier Matchup Picks
Brooks Koepka -105 vs. Sergio Garcia
It’s been a few months since we’ve seen Koepka at his best. He’s finished outside the top 15 in six of his last seven starts since winning in Singapore in May. And the one thing about Koepka is he doesn’t stay in a slump for long. After opening the season with a top 5 in Mayakoba he had five straight below average showings until a T9 in Adelaide which was followed by his fourth LIV victory. So I expect better things from Koepka this week.
Kevin Na +100 vs. Jason Kokrak
I’ll admit I’m backing Na for his even-money price. But there are other reasons that some might not understand. I know, Na has been a disappointment since joining LIV with more head-scratching results than actual decent finishes. He’s gone four straight tournaments without a top 20 and he has only two top 10s. However, he also has a history at Greenbrier, which I’m going to tap into. He won here on the PGA Tour in 2018 has another T7 and a T14 in his five recent visits.
Peter Uihlein -105 vs. Harold Varner III
If Uihlein treats LIV like it’s the Asian Tour he’s going to win a lot of money. In four events on that tour since February he has a win, a T3 and solo sixth, and he said the experience helped make him a better player, meaning good things are ahead. Just last week Uihlein triumphed in the International Series England by seven shots over a strong field. He also captured a podium in April at the Saudi Open and he’s coming off his best LIV finish since a runner-up in Vegas.
Thomas Pieters -110 vs. Lucas Herbert
Over the last few months Pieters has some decent results on the worldwide stage. He has a pair of top 10s on the DP World Tour and a top 20 in the International Series England that was won by another of my matchup picks Uihlein. He also has three top 15s in his last seven LIV starts with his confident play giving me confidence to back him.
David Puig +115 vs. Abraham Ancer
Another player with a strong international resume, Puig has done well on the Asian Tour with occasional signs of brilliance in LIV events. His four Asian Tour starts this year have resulted in four top 10s with a win in Malaysia in February. His T11 last time out in the UK resulted in his second best finish in a LIV tournament when he scored below 70 in all three rounds.
