With only three tournaments remaining time is running out for Jon Rahm to claim his first LIV title. The golf world and oddsmakers expect it to happen, though, with Rahm the outright betting favorite for this week’s LIV Golf United Kingdom. The field returns to England for the third straight year but will attack a different layout. After two years at the Centurion Club it’s off to JCB Golf and Country Club, recognized as one of the most exclusive in the UK. Rahm has finished inside the top 10 in every LIV tournament he completed and is coming off his best result this year in a major getting a share of seventh at Royal Troon. Last time out in Spain Sergio Garcia became the third straight first-time LIV winner and seventh in 10 events. Last month in Nashville Tyrrell Hatton won his first and he’s third in the outright odds with Bryson DeChambeau second. The trio all have odds shorter than 9/1. Need to Know
It’s the same general area but another different course for the field to navigate. JCB and LIV Golf reached a multi-year agreement in 2023 and JCB Golf and Country Club is hosting for the first time. Opened in 2018 the club is young but it’s already made the rounds as one of the most exclusive in the UK. The course stretches to 7,255 yards and will play at par 71. Typically a par 5, the 506-yard sixth hole will play at par 4 for LIV. There is a good mixture of long and short holes to test the field. At over 300 yards the second and 12th holes are drivable par 4s while the 632-yard 10th hole is the longest on the track. That behemoth follows the shortest hole, the 170-yard ninth. Six English-born players will get a homecoming of sorts and some if not all of them have experienced the course, which could give them an edge. Hatton has the shortest odds of the group that includes Richard Bland, Paul Casey, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Sam Horsfield.
LIV Golf United Kingdom Matchup Picks
Cameron Smith +136 vs. Joaquin Niemann
When you look at the totality of his season it hasn’t been bad, but I think a lot more is expected of Smith. He has a couple of runner-up finishes in Hong Kong and Singapore and put together back-to-back top 10s before a MC at The Open. Smith has placed among the top 10 four times in LIV events and was T6 at the Masters. He also has three career LIV victories, one of which came in this tournament last year at Centurion Club.
Louis Oosthuizen -101 vs. Dean Burmester
With four top 5s among his six top 10s in LIV events, Oosthuizen has made me some coin in tournament matchups and he has favorable odds in this one. He’s also done well in this tournament when it was played at the other course collecting a T10 in 2022 and solo fourth last year. The South African has a unique ability to adapt to his surroundings and that will come in handy on this course.
Brooks Koepka +103 vs. Patrick Reed
His price caught my eye but so did Koepka’s penchant for snapping out of slumps in a big way. Since a T9 in Houston last month, Koepka finished outside the top 25 in each of his last four starts, including the last two majors. He had a similar spell late last year with no better than a T24 in four starts before he won in Jeddah. Earlier this year he placed outside the top 25 in three straight starts before a T9 in Adelaide and a win in Singapore. I’ll back him at plus odds.
Dustin Johnson -115 vs. Carlos Ortiz
We haven’t heard much of Johnson lately, but he is coming off his best finish in a major this year and he’s finished T17 or better in three of his last four LIV starts. His metrics in driving accuracy and GIR have been showing improvement lately which means it’s likely just a matter of time before he ends up where we always expect him to.
Matthew Wolff +108 vs. Talor Gooch
If I wasn’t a fan of Wolff I probably wouldn’t back him as much as I do. There’s no denying the talent and the results haven’t been bad, they just haven’t been good enough to get him near the top of the leaderboard. It’s not like he hasn’t been there, though, with two top 5s among his five top 20s. He’s also riding the best stretch of golf this season finishing among the top 17 in each of his last three LIV starts. Give me plus odds and I’ll happily back Wolff.
