Everybody loves an underdog and several of them hit the links this weekend at the LIV Golf Invitational Boston. It’s always easy to look at the top of the odds board and back a favorite since they are expected to perform well. But the real payday comes when a player further down the odds list that you backed triumphs. There is little chance Jediah Morgan rallies to capture the title this week and throwing down on him at +30000 is a waste. But there is plenty of value when looking at golfers in the middle of the pack.
The chance of a big longshot winning the third LIV installment got less likely when the Series announced new additions, including world No. 2 and Open Championship winner Cameron Smith, who was immediately positioned as the betting favorite. He’s joined by other highly-ranked players Joaquin Niemann, Harold Varner III, Anirban Lahiri, Cameron Tringale and Marc Leishman.
The three LIV Golf Series tournaments have seen players further down the odds board emerge victorious. Charl Schwartzel and Brendan Grace were both around 30/1 when winning the first two tournaments. Henrik Stenson was a 60/1 longshot claiming the title at Bedminster. We’ll take a look at a few longshots worth considering for the LIV Golf Invitational Boston, which takes place from Sept. 2-4 at The International Golf Club just outside Boston. Top Longshot Picks to Win LIV Golf Invitational Boston
Cameron Tringale ( +4500 ) – Staying in the price range similar to past winners, Tringale is a name that comes to mind. A recent edition to the LIV field, he has the distinction of winning the most money on the PGA Tour without registering a victory. While that doesn’t instill much confidence in his outright chances, he’s doing something right to win a lot of money while staying consistently ranked among the top-100 players in the world. Tringale had a few close calls on the PGA Tour this season with five top-10 finishes. His best showing was a T2 at the ZOZO Championship while also securing a T3 at the Farmers Insurance Open. More recently he was T6 at the Scottish Open in July showing the ability to thrive in similar field tournaments.
Anirban Lahiri ( +4500 ) – Another player listed at 45/1 is India’s top-ranked pro Lahiri. With 18 international victories on his resume, he’s no stranger to the winner’s circle, and he enjoyed one of his finest seasons on the PGA circuit racking up over $3 million in prize money. During a stretch earlier in the year Lahiri had four top-15s in a five-start stretch, including runner-up to Smith at THE PLAYERS Championship. He placed among the top-10 at the Wyndham Championship in early August helping him qualify for the FedExCup playoffs.
Laurie Canter ( +8500 ) – Venturing further down the odds board Canter comes to mind for the mere fact that he’s one of the few players in the field to play competitive golf between LIV events. Just a few weeks ago Canter finished T23 at the DP World Tour’s Real Czech Masters while being a consistent threat overseas for several years.
Martin Kaymer ( +8500 ) – He’s yet to crack the top-10 in any of his three LIV starts, but it’s hard to overlook Kaymer, a former world No. 1 and two-time major champion. Prior to making the switch he showed flashes of his past form with some close calls on both the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. While he’s not consistently the title threat he once was, Kaymer has gotten progressively better results showing he could be in line for a bigger payday. He was 3-under at Bedminster finishing 12th, his best so far. And let’s be honest, the time between tournaments and playing fewer holes will certainly benefit veteran players.
Bernd Wiesberger ( +9500 ) – I was a little surprised to see Wiesberger offered at this price and immediately considered him for this article. I guess when you finish outside the top-30 in a field of 48 three times, oddsmakers notice. But it isn’t a stretch to think the Austrian can overcome his difficulties and play good golf since that’s what he’s done throughout his career. Just a few years ago he was a three-time winner on the European Tour taking down some of the best players in that Tour’s biggest events. I have no problem backing him at this price.
Phil Mickelson ( +10550 ) – The game has fallen over the last few years, and let’s face it Mickelson is paid for his name and not his game. There isn’t much incentive for Lefty to win since he already got a reported $2 million signing bonus. But like any pro athlete the competitive nature of the sport takes over. And it’s hard to forget his memorable run at the 2021 PGA Championship when he triumphed with odds of +22500.
