The new Saudi-backed golf league added several more big names to the roster making the 48-man field for this week’s LIV Golf Invitational Boston the strongest yet. World No. 2 Cameron Smith is the biggest of the bunch and was instantly installed as the betting favorite for the 54-hole tournament at The International Golf Club just outside Boston. Smith is the only player not named Dustin Johnson to hold down the top spot on the outright betting board and looks to add to his collection of victories this year that rose to three after a triumph at The Open Championship. Former PGA players Joaquin Niemann, Harold Varner III, Cameron Tringale, Anirban Lahiri and Marc Leishman also make their LIV Golf debuts and are featured in tournament matchups. Need to Know
The addition of six more players strengthened not only the field but also the credibility of the new entity. The ability to make more money while playing fewer events and holes has that appeal for golfers. To recap, the LIV Golf Series plays only three rounds and 54 holes, though time between tournaments is shortened from now until the season-ending event in Miami. Still, a few weeks between can do wonders for the mental and physical well-being of participants. There needs to be a sense of urgency with fewer holes, but the field of 48 means no cut. And most players will need some time to get used to a venue hosting a rare professional tournament. The International Golf Club is typical of high end venues in the Northeast with tight, tree-lined fairways. Carved into the landscape, the Oaks Course at just under 7,000 yards will host. Normally a par 72, two holes had a swing chopped off reducing par to 70. It will be a test of distance and accuracy for the field.
LIV Golf Invitational Boston Matchup Picks
Talor Gooch -127 vs. Louis Oosthuizen
Few have been as consistent as Gooch since LIV started play with a top-10 in each of the three events. The price was a little steep for my liking, but the end result is what matters, and I’ll back him for that. It seems as though Oosthuizen never fully recovered from his devastating blows in major championships last year and he sputtered at Bedminster falling to 20th. We’re not sure what the course offers, but Gooch has been remarkably consistent at tournaments played on similar terrain, and I’ll back him despite the price.
Martin Kaymer -108 vs. Laurie Canter
Kaymer has been around for awhile and had some fantastic results in his prime. He’s not removed from his best days on the course, but the highlights haven’t consistently been there. The LIV format would seemingly benefit a veteran player with more down time between tournaments, and Kaymer has performed well so far with three top-10s. And I’m not ready to fade a former world No. 1 and two-time major champion just yet.
Kevin Na +103 vs. Cameron Tringale
Not many players have plus odds in matchups and there’s a reason for those that do. It’s been a struggle for Na since joining LIV Golf with finishes of 36th and 39th surrounding a 13th in Portland. And that has me believing Na is ready for a rebound since his game wasn’t all that bad before making the move. And while it’s still golf, a new tour, format and surroundings will likely have an effect on Tringale.
Branden Grace -112 vs. Marc Leishman
Nobody was better than Grace in Portland closing with a 65 to win by two-swings. And he hasn’t been bad in the other events, either. He grabbed a podium finish in London in the inaugural tournament and though he slipped a bit last time out, he’s been consistently good and gets a layout this week that fits his game.
Dustin Johnson -106 vs. Joaquin Niemann -124
Johnson already got paid handsomely for playing in the startup league making me wonder just how motivated he is to lay it all on the line. Well, competitors like nothing more than to win and now that he’s not the favorite in the outright market he’ll be moved to add to his career win total. Catching DJ at a decent price when he’s ready to erupt is a bonus, and it’s hard to bet against three top-8s in three starts.
