Let’s be honest the LIV Golf Invitational Series and its players have taken a lot of crap from fellow golfers, the PGA Tour and some hacks in the media. The bottom line is that players get paid to golf just like every professional tour out there, regardless of politics. And if the last tournament is any indication the Saudi-backed startup is headed in the right direction. With the PGA Tour on a brief hiatus after its season-ending tournament, all golfing eyes are on the LIV Golf Invitational Boston this week with 48 players pegging it up at The International Golf Club in Bolton, MA from September 2-4. Making his LIV Golf debut after recently joining the upstart circuit, 2022 Open Champion Cameron Smith is the first player not named Dustin Johnson to top the odds board. But don’t worry, DJ is a close second. Along with Smith, Joaquin Niemann, Harold Varner III, Cameron Tringale, Marc Leishman and Anirban Lahiri will make their Series debuts. Odds Analysis
Dustin Johnson +525
Now that he’s not the favorite maybe we’ll see Johnson play like the former world No. 1 he is, or was. He’s gotten better results in each of his first three starts in the Series going from eighth in London to fourth in Portland before getting on the podium with a third in New Jersey. DJ also had some nice results on the PGA Tour most recently grabbing a top-10 at The Open in July. He’s accustomed to winning with 28 career professional victories and as one of the first to join LIV Golf he’s itching to cash in the big payday.
Kevin Na +4500
I’m not excited about his recent play and I’m sure Na isn’t pleased. A couple of finishes in the high 30s sandwiched around a 13th at Portland moved his price up making him an inviting pick this week. How so you ask? Well, he had some great days on the PGA Tour this season and won the unofficial QBE Shootout last December. His game fits a tidy course like we’ll see this week and the three previous winners were all in the same price range.
Carlos Ortiz +3503
He’s been knocking on the door in his first two LIV starts finishing among the top four both times while scoring 70 or lower in all six rounds. He had a tough time on the PGA side before making the move, which is maybe why he made it. But he looks more confident and comfortable in his new surroundings, and winning isn’t anything new for him.
Cameron Tringale +4500
Another one of the new LIV members, Tringale also makes the move after a recent rough spell on the PGA Tour. However, some of his finer moments came in events with a field that measures up to what he’ll see this week. His best finish was a T2 at the ZOZO Championship with four other top-10s in events where the field lacked a lot of big names. Not to take anything away from Tringale, who performed valiantly all season, but this is more to his liking.
Matthew Wolff +2501
I haven’t always backed Wolff, but I’ve kept an eye on him for awhile. He’s an immense talent who has taken a liking to the new LIV Series carding an impressive final round 64 at Bedminster for a runner-up finish two shots off the lead. That came after his eighth place showing in Portland. He can shrink the course with his drives eliminating the one area that has hounded him recently, and take advantage with a hot putter to put him in the thick of the race.
Course: The International Golf Club – 6,944 yards, Par 70
Tucked away just a stone’s throw from Boston in Bolton lies a Northeast gem, otherwise known as The International Golf Club. Two courses sit on the property with golfers using the shorter Oaks Course this week. At just about 7,000 yards it will play as a par-70 and it’s typical of the challenging courses in this part of the country. Carved into the local landscape the track features tight, tree-lined fairways with bunker-protected greens. Two holes that usually play at par-5 will be par-4s dropping par to 70. The remaining two par-5 holes each stretch to over 550 yards while a pair of short par-3s offers some relief. Overall it’s a good test of distance and accuracy off the tee.
