While a number of PGA Tour members are off stealing money from the DP World Tour in Italy this week, the LIV Golf Invitational Chicago will take place at Rich Harvest Farms from Sept. 16-18 with another $4 million awaiting the winner. We see the usual suspects at the top of the odds board with Cameron Smith and Dustin Johnson opening as co-betting favorites. The outright favorite in the first three tournaments, DJ fell behind Smith on the odds chart in Boston only to emerge victorious in a playoff. DJ bested LIV newcomers Anirban Lahiri and Joaquin Niemann burying a 60-foot eagle putt on the first extra hole. Niemann looks for a better finish this week positioned as the third-favorite with the trio sporting odds shorter than 10/1. Odds Analysis
Bryson DeChambeau +2500
When talking about big hitters one player comes to mind. Nobody hits the ball farther than DeChambeau, though the rest of his game needs to catch up. Struggling on the PGA side before making the move, we saw plenty of inconsistent play from DeChambeau. However, he bested the field on the Winged Foot monster to win the 2020 U.S. Open and he had his most consistent LIV outing in Boston with three sub-70s. I probably would have taken the risk even if DeChambeau didn’t play well last time out. Now it’s a must.
Talor Gooch +1200
Few have been as consistently good as Gooch since the LIV Series debut. The one thing that would make his run more special is getting a victory. He placed among the top-10 in all four events finishing two shots off the pace in Boston at 13-under. Gooch has decent length off the tee and is more accurate than most giving him a leg up. And we’ve seen good play manifest into titles before which is why I’m backing him in Chicago.
Joaquin Niemann +800
The talk in Boston surrounding the newcomers revolved around Cam Smith, and while he didn’t disappoint it was Niemann who was just a bit better. Reaching a playoff in his LIV debut, Niemann continued his run of strong form that carried him to a T11 at the TOUR Championship wrap up a PGA season that included a win at the Genesis Invitational and four additional top-5s.
Cameron Smith +600
Speaking of Smith he’s also included in my list of potential winners this week. Smith was the headliner in the most recent incoming class after winning three tournaments on the PGA side, including The Open Championship by carding a closing 64 to make up a number of strokes. We saw him close strong in Boston with a 63 just missing the playoff by a shot. It’s been a great 2022 so far and the Aussie isn’t done adding to it.
Matthew Wolff +2800
I’m backing Wolff again because I feel he has a lot more to offer. And it looks like he has the swagger back in his game. He stumbled a bit in Boston after opening with a 63 and the lead. That followed his T8 in Portland and runner-up in Bedminster giving Wolff a boost of confidence. He should feel good using his length on a course that plays to big hitters and his improved short game will keep him in the running.
Course: Rich Harvest Farms – 7,735 yards, Par 72
Located just outside Chicago in Sugar Grove, Illinois is this 18-hole championship golf course that’s hosted amateur competitions and collegiate events since opening in 1989. This will be a new venture for probably everyone in the field and it won’t be easy. Stretched out to over 7,700 yards it’s long by any standard and coupled with a constant supply of trees, bunkers and water hazards the course will be demanding even for the best of golfers. Given the length we could see big hitters thrive as long as the ball stays in play. So golfers don’t get too comfortable this is quite a different layout than what we saw in Boston where that venue played less than 7,000 yards.
