I don’t think Dustin Johnson is having second thoughts about making the switch to LIV Golf. On Sunday he became the 2022 individual champion securing another bundle of cash in the process to go along with his signing bonus and earnings from competing. And just like in a number of tournaments this season DJ is positioned at the top of the odds board for this week’s LIV Golf Invitational Jeddah. The second event in consecutive weeks is also the regular season finale leaving Johnson with little to play for. However, cash is on the table with two spots on the season-long individual competition still to be decided. And we saw a sixth different winner last week with Eugenio Lopez-Chacarra besting Patrick Reed by 3-shots in Bangkok. Odds Analysis
Abraham Ancer +2500
He’s out of the running for the season-long individual payday so getting additional coin is going to come from the team competition or an outright victory. I’m banking on the latter in this scenario. Ancer put together his best finish last week with a 10th in Bangkok and appears to have regained the form that made him a feared player on the PGA side before the transition. A superb ball-striker his game appears to be a good fit for the Royal Greens layout and he’s worth a shot at his current price.
Dustin Johnson +450
There are a number of reasons to not back Johnson this week, and while I went through all of them I can’t completely dismiss him. His run of top-8 finishes ended with a 16th in Bangkok, but DJ secured the season-long title and $18 million that comes with it. There really is nothing to play for, but being the competitor he is you know he’s going to give his best. And he’s been really good on this layout winning the Saudi International twice with a runner-up in three consecutive starts from 2019-2021. Even if he’s not trying he’ll end up near the top of the leaderboard.
Jason Kokrak +5000
It’s been hit or miss for Kokrak on the LIV Golf Series this year, and after two misses I’m looking for him to hit this week. A stumble in Chicago followed by a 20th in Bangkok is not we expect to see from the veteran with 11 worldwide titles on his resume. Three of those came just last year when he was tearing up the PGA circuit. He hasn’t suddenly become a bad golfer and I look for a rebound this week on a familiar layout for him.
Marc Leishman +4000
As you can tell I’m backing away from some of the bigger names competing this week since LIV results have been unpredictable. Lopez-Chacarra was well down the odds board last week proving that you just never know. Leishman had his finest showing in Bangkok finishing T10 and his game is also well-suited for the Royal Greens layout. That doesn’t mean he’ll have success, but it gives him a shot and at his price he’s a solid risk.
Harold Varner III +2200
The last tournament played at Royal Greens was won by Varner giving him an edge over the field. And he’s coming off a strong showing in Bangkok finishing at 14-under for a share of sixth. Back in February Varner had one of the best putts in golf holing a 90-footer for eagle to help defeat Bubba Watson by a stroke.
Course: Royal Greens Golf & Country Club – 7,010 yards, Par 72
The final individual competition is a home game of sorts for the Saudi-backed LIV Golf. This week’s event takes place in Saudi Arabia at one of the majestic courses in the region. Opened in 2017, Royal Greens is host to the Saudi International started in 2019 as a European Tour stop. Earlier this year it became the flagship tournament on the Asian Tour with 27 players in this week’s field taking part in the tournament back in February when Harold Varner III emerged with a 1-shot win. At just over 7,000 yards it’s a short track and typical of courses in the area. Flat and wide-open covers plenty of mistakes, but an abundance of sand traps, water and natural defenses keep things in check.
