Dustin Johnson headlines the field for the inaugural LIV Golf event in London, England that begins on Thursday. Johnson recently announced that he is leaving the PGA Tour to compete in LIV Golf events. He is definitely the biggest name, but not the only one, as other recognizable names will be playing in LIV tournaments including Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen, Kevin Na, Taylor Gooch and others. This event in London has a start time of 9 a.m. Eastern Time on Thursday. There will be a total of 48 players competing against each other in traditional stroke play format over 54 holes. There will be no cut and the player with the lowest score after Saturday’s final round will be the winner. There will also be team play with 12 teams of four players each. Those teams will compete with the best stroke play scores of the top two players counting in the first two rounds, while the best scores of the top three players on each team counting on Saturday. The winning player in the stroke play portion of the tournament will take home $4 million dollars. Even finishing last will pay the player $120,000. There is also big money awarded to the winning teams. The first place teams gets $5 million, the second place team $1.5 million and the third place team takes home a half million.
Favorite
Dustin Johnson is listed as the favorite at odds of 4-1. One thing you should know about golf betting in general is that betting favorites in terms of the odds to win is a bad long term investment. Golf favorites simply don’t win enough to be profitable. That begin said, we really don’t know how this new LIV Golf tour will evolve and there are definitely some differences which could make favorites a little more appealing. The events are just 54-holes and there is no cut, plus there are only 48 players in the field. Johnson still seems overvalued at odds of 4-1, especially considering he has not been at his best this season on the PGA Tour.
Players to Watch
I think you have to take a look at Oosthuizen at odds of 10-1. He is the highest ranked player in the latest World Golf Rankings after Johnson. We know Oosthuizen can handle the pressure and we know he can still win. Gooch is getting a lot of the press because he is a younger player but he is still very inconsistent. I think there is more value in taking Oosthuizen at double-digit odds. I am a little surprised that Horsfield isn’t getting more respect. He is actually ranked higher in the world than is Wiesberger and if I was going to take a European Tour regular it would be Horsfield.
Live Longshots
I think Schwartzel and Grace are both worth flyers this week at nice odds. Schwartzel has been in contention in big events this season and has shown flashes of coming close to a win and he is listed at odds of 28-1. Grace is still very capable of playing well and we get him at odds of 33-1.
