A rarity for players has them working in back-to-back weeks with the field assembling at prestigious Sentosa Golf Club for LIV Golf Singapore , the fifth of 14 scheduled tournaments this year. The upstart league makes its first trek to the island country in Southeast Asia after a hugely successful debut last week in Australia. Playing in front of raucous sellout crowds, Talor Gooch joined the fraternity of first time winners with a three-shot triumph. Four different players have prevailed this season with Brooks Koepka the lone two-time winner. Despite that the top of the odds board looks familiar with Cameron Smith holding the top spot. Mainstays Dustin Johnson and Joaquin Niemann are also up there with Brooks Koepka opening as the second favorite. VIDEO Odds Analysis
Sergio Garcia +2200
It’s not a terribly difficult course, but there are some elements the players must deal with and course experience will be a factor. Garcia has that knowledge while being successful getting it. In three stops at Sentosa from 2017-2019, Garcia placed among the top 11 with a victory in 2018. That success coupled with a recent run of strong form has me backing the Spaniard. He was -4 in all three rounds last week for a T11 getting greased up for a trip to venue that’s been good to him in the past.
Dustin Johnson +1400
It seems as though it’s time Johnson made some noise. One of the most established golfers in the League DJ played well the last three tournaments after struggling in Mexico. The scores are getting progressively better with 13-under last week putting him in the top 10. If it wasn’t for Gooch’s runaway DJ would’ve been in the mix. Still, he’s playing well and visits a course that suits his game just fine.
Phil Mickelson +5000
If course knowledge is a factor like I mentioned with Sergio, Lefty has the biggest advantage of anyone in the field. I guess that happens when you’re also the oldest player. Mickelson will tee it up at this joint for the seventh time in his career, though he hasn’t played here since 2012. He had his best showing of the season last week going multiple shots under par for the first time to finish 16th. That came after a strong showing in Augusta proving that Lefty still has game.
Louis Oosthuizen +3500
I’m going to ride the South African in this one after a solid showing in Australia. It was painful watching Oosthuizen limp to 42nd in Orlando then retire from the Masters after an opening 76. Whatever was bothering him appears to have passed after carding 12-under last week. Oosthuizen is another player with a history at Sentosa earning a runner-up in 2012.
Peter Uihlein +2000
Checking all the boxes makes Uihlein a solid pick to become another first time winner. He’s been one of the most consistent players in the League finishing among the top 10 in all four events carding a 68 or better in 10 of his 12 rounds. He’s debuting on this course, but his experiences at different venues around the globe during his time on the DP World Tour and Challenge Tour should keep him humble. He’s also one of the longest hitters giving him an edge in that category.
Course: Sentosa Golf Club – 7,406 yards, par 71
After navigating a course that measured less than 7,000 yards last week the field has an abrupt change with the Serapong Course at Sentosa stretching to over 7,400 yards allowing the bangers to take center stage after being silenced down under. One of the most exclusive clubs in Asia, Sentosa hosted the Singapore Open with a number of DP World Tour veterans participating. Ian Poulter won that event in 2009 and Sergio Garcia emerged victorious in 2018. One of two championship courses on the property, The Serapong opened in 1982 with a major renovation taking place in 2020. It’s still wide open off the tee with numerous bunkers serving as a defense. Holes 3-7 are known as the Dragons Tail with the 495-yard par-4 third hole the longest of its kind and the most difficult on the layout.
