One reason why LIV Golf hasn’t entered the mainstream consciousness of the American betting public is that they just don’t play often enough. Their counterparts on the PGA side play a tournament every week with LIV teeing it up once a month. Well, for this week at least LIV Golf will be on the front burner with the second tournament of the season taking place in the Arizona desert with the LIV Golf Tucson. Familiar names reside at the top of the odds board in the 48-man field with Cameron Smith and Dustin Johnson jockeying for position. They are joined by Joaquin Niemann with a total of seven players boasting odds shorter than 20/1. Charles Howell III won the opening tournament in Mexico becoming the eighth different player to win an individual title in as many events. If you follow LIV Golf enough to comprehend the team concept there are odds for team results as well. The 48-player field is divided into 12 teams of four players. Odds Analysis
Paul Casey +1200
Injuries hampered Casey last season as did his adjustment to a new league. With those issues behind him I expect the veteran to start playing the way we know he can. And he appears to be well on his way with top 5 at the Saudi International earlier this year and a fourth-place showing at the opener in Mayakoba. Casey also was around playing both WGC events on this course with decent results. He also has ties to the area having played collegiately at Arizona State.
Bryson DeChambeau +4500
DeChambeau checks all the boxes as a potential winner. He’s one of if not the longest hitter in pro golf allowing him to take advantage of the course length and generous fairways. He’s also a former major champion. He hasn’t enjoyed a lot of success in LIV Golf but there’s no denying his ability. And priced where he is DeChambeau has plenty of value. Howell was in the same range last time out emerging with a win at Mayakoba so anything is possible.
Brooks Koepka +3000
Much like DeChambeau, Koepka checks a lot of boxes. Unlike Bryson he’s a winner in the LIV Golf league. There has yet to be a two-time individual champ and at his price Koepka holds plenty of value. Though he probably hasn’t played this course, at least in a competitive tournament, Koepka has the game that should translate well. He can hit for distance and his approach game is fitted for elevated greens. I’m backing Brooks more because of his price since other players higher up the odds board have similar traits.
Louis Oosthuizen +4000
Saying the South African is in a rut would be an understatement. He finished outside the top-30 in each of his last three LIV starts, but I still can’t get over the memorable run Oosthuizen had on the PGA Tour just a short while ago earning three podium finishes in four major championship events in 2021. One top 3 could be considered lucky but three means you can play some quality golf, and I still believe Oosthuizen has some wins in his bag.
Peter Uihlein +2800
It’s hard to say anybody deserves a win since players have to go earn it on the course. But Uihlein certainly deserves the reward after coming so close. He held the lead after two rounds at Mayakoba before finishing second, his third runner-up showing in his last four LIV Golf starts dating back to last season.
Course: The Gallery Golf Club (South Course) – 7,469 yards, par 71
Some veteran players who were around over a decade ago might be familiar with The Gallery Golf Club layout. The South Course hosted the 2007 and 2008 WGC Match Play event with Henrik Stenson winning the first playing. Stenson is in the field this week with odds of 40/1. At nearly 7,500 yards it’s a long par 71 with open fairways that should benefit big hitters. And those who played in Portland last season could have a glimpse since the same designer is behind both courses. Branden Grace prevailed by 2-swings over Carlos Ortiz at Pumpkin Ridge last year. Resort courses don’t host WGC events meaning this is a difficult track. That should also favor players who were successful in prestigious events in the past.
