After two tournaments abroad, both of which were won by Talor Gooch, LIV returns stateside for the sixth of 14 events with LIV Golf Tulsa taking place at Cedar Ridge Country Club in Broken Arrow, OK. Earlier this season Brooks Koepka became the first two-time winner with Gooch joining him as the first player to win back-to-back tournaments. We’ve also seen a change at the top of the odds board with Koepka opening as the betting favorite followed by Gooch. The regulars are still there with Cameron Smith the third favorite with Dustin Johnson among the top 5. Recent invites to Gooch and Anirban Lahiri upped the number of LIV golfers scheduled to compete in next week’s PGA Championship to 12 giving them added incentive to up their game. VIDEO Odds Analysis
Abraham Ancer +2800
It hasn’t been the start Ancer would’ve liked finishing 20th or worse in his last five events. However, the skill is there to put a solid outing together and a return to OK where Ancer starred for the University of Oklahoma should be inspiring. There’s nothing to suggest Ancer breaks out of his slump, but that’s been a trend in LIV Golf this season, with the exception of last tournament. Still, Ancer slots into a good place on the odds board with a nice payout for a guy who won a bunch during his college days and I’ll back the player who nearly cracked the top 10 OWGR rankings less than two years ago.
Talor Gooch +1100
I wouldn’t normally back a player who won the previous two tournaments, but the LIV setup with only 48 golfers certainly helps his chances. And no one is in better form right now. He kind of put the whole course experience argument to rest with impressive outings in Australia and Singapore without ever playing there. Sometimes you have to ride the hot hand and that’s definitely attached to Gooch right now.
Dustin Johnson +1600
Some of the dozen or so players heading to Oak Hill for the PGA Championship next week will likely be working on fine tuning their game rather than a victory. I suppose if the former is successful the latter will follow. Johnson is definitely looking to work out kinks with no finish higher than seventh in five starts. He was Mr. Consistent last year winning the individual points race and will be looking to get his game in order before the next major.
Kevin Na +6600
I saw some of the Singapore event on TV and was impressed with the play of Na. He looked so composed on the course with nothing fazing him. When looking at results I was dismayed to see that his best finish was eighth in Tucson in March. He’s shown more consistency lately going multiple strokes under par in each of his last eight rounds. And his game is accuracy, which will play well at Cedar Ridge making Na a huge buy at his price.
Patrick Reed +1600
There have been a lot more positives surrounding Reed’s game lately and it seems like only a matter of time before the former major champion writes his name on the list of LIV winners. Reed finished fourth in Orlando followed by a podium in Adelaide. One issue with playing 54 holes is that one poor round can prove costly, which was the case in Singapore dropping Reed to 14th. Toss in his T4 at Augusta and Reed’s been one of the most consistent players the last few months.
Course: Cedar Ridge Country Club – 7,213 yards, par 70
Constructed in the late 1960s, Cedar Ridge is one of the most prestigious destinations in Oklahoma ranked among the top 5 best courses in the state by Golf Digest. At just over 7,200 yards it’s a long par 70 with few distractions. While hosting collegiate championships and the 1983 Women’s US Open, this will be the most high-profile men’s tournament in the club’s history. The course had a face lift in 2016 that included the removal of trees and redesigning of bunkers that eliminated a number of sand hazards. A unique part of the setup is that the nines will be reversed, though it’s not a huge deal since most of the field has never played the layout. There are a number of doglegs on the course limiting what some big hitters can do and making accuracy a key attribute.
