Following an extended break that saw plenty happen, LIV Golf Valderrama kick starts the second half of the season with the first trip to continental Europe at the Real Club Valderrama in Spain. The biggest news of course is the proposed merger of professional golf leagues, which doesn’t immediately impact the field and likely won’t until further details emerge. That news shouldn’t overshadow the fact that last time out Harold Varner III became the sixth different winner in seven events this season. Varner earned his third professional victory and first since 2016 after failing to win during his stint on the PGA Tour. But it’s the familiar names that dot the top of the outright odds board with Cam Smith the favorite and only player with shorter than 10/1 odds. Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson are close behind. VIDEO Odds Analysis
Abraham Ancer +4350
There are times you have a feeling about a certain player even though he’s done very little to instill confidence. That’s been the case with Ancer this season, whose best finish is 17th that came in the opening tournament at Mayakoba. The course seems to be a good fit for Ancer’s game, at least when he’s playing well. The time off between starts likely helped and in fact I’m betting on it. He hasn’t become a bad golfer rather he’s going through a difficult time. And good players always find a way out of their funk.
Sergio Garcia +1250
Backing Garcia is more of an informed pick just because of his success at Valderrama. Playing on home soil the Spaniard has played Valderrama a lot and he has several victories to show for it. Garcia has for the most part been absent from the LIV leaderboard since joining, though he did have his best finish in April falling in a playoff. He’s been more consistent with his play and getting a match at home could be what puts him over the top for his first LIV win.
Branden Grace +3700
I find a lot of value in Grace at this price and have no problem putting a few bills behind him. He is a winner capturing the $4 million prize in Portland last year and his game appears to be in a good place with consecutive top 5 showings. Grace was eligible for the U.S. Open but elected to forego the tournament. Placing third in Tulsa and second in DC moved Grace into second in the individual points race with a title putting him in the driver’s seat for the bonus that comes with it.
Cameron Smith +950
Compared to his play last year we could say Smith is having a down season. It’s difficult to live up to the lofty standards he set, but that hasn’t prevented him from trying. Smith showed signs that his game is coming around placing inside the top 10 in his last four LIV starts, including a playoff loss in Tulsa last month. He also went T9 at the PGA and fourth at the U.S. Open in his recent major starts. He’s playing good golf and the odds reflect that.
Matthew Wolff +6550
We’ve seen several longshots emerge victorious in LIV during its brief history and backing Wolff at this price climbs into that range. It wasn’t that long ago Wolff was on the cusp of becoming one of the top players in the game. Hardships forced him to take time away from the sport, however he remains an option despite not finishing better than 34th in his last four starts. That all came after he recorded a top 5 in Orlando, so we know he can play.
Course: Real Club Valderrama – 7,010 yards, par 71
You can’t say LIV plays at questionable courses. Long considered one of if not the best course in Europe, Real Club Valderrama has played host to numerous high-profile events over its lifetime. One of the more notable was the 1997 Ryder Cup Depending on where you look the distance is either just over 7,000 yards or just under that number. Either way it’s short by pro standards but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. The par-5 fourth hole, known as La Cascada, is the signature hole with a two-tiered green and water to the right. However, the par-5 17th will offer the most intrigue. The green is defended by water in the front and bunkers in the back forcing players to make a decision to aim for the green on their second shot.
