Here’s what we know ahead of the final day of the 2019-20 Premier League. Liverpool have won their first Premier League title in 30 years, Manchester City have long had second place on lockdown, and Norwich City will finish dead last. Everything else is up for grabs including two Champions League spots and the last Premier League lifeline. All that uncertainly will lead to plenty of excitement on Sunday, July 26, and you can watch every match on the NBC family of networks.
Champions League Battle
Heading into the final day of the Premier League season, Chelsea and Manchester United control their own European destinies. The Blues and Red Devils will certainly be in one international competition next season, but they would much rather take part in the Champions League than the Europa League. Both clubs are sitting on 63 points, and the Red Devils have a commanding lead in terms of goal differential with an advantage of +28 compared to +13 for the Blues.
The most exciting match of the day will be Leicester City playing host to Manchester United. The Foxes are just a point behind both Manchester United and Chelsea in their bid to make it back to the Champions League, but they fumbled away a big lead in the standings. Prior to the stoppage, Leicester City held an eight-point lead on United, but the Foxes are just 2-3-3 in their eight Premier League games and are now looking up at the Red Devils.
Although they will be playing at home in King Power Stadium, Leicester City are underdogs given what we have seen from Manchester United over the last month. The Red Devils are 6-2-0 in the Premier League since the season resumed, and they knocked off the Foxes when these clubs met in September before everything changed.
Given that Manchester United and Leicester City are squaring off in one match, you would think that Chelsea are relatively safe in their bid for the top four. However, the Blues are in a dangerous position as they substantially trail both clubs in goal differential. That means Chelsea must earn a result against Wolverhampton in order to ensure they return to the Champions League. Wolves are no pushover though, as they have made a reputation for themselves as Big Six killers over the past couple years. The Wanderers are currently ahead of both Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal in the table, and they are only allowing a little over a goal per game.
Relegation Battle
At the other end of the table, you have three clubs fighting to finish 17th and avoid the drop to Championship. Aston Villa’s upset win over Arsenal on Tuesday gives them a slight advantage, as they are now level with Watford at 34 points. Villa are ahead by one goal in terms of goal differential, so both teams will certainly be scoreboard watching throughout their games on Sunday.
Bournemouth have an outside chance at navigating their way to safety too. The Cherries are three points behind Villa and Watford and are level with the Hornets in terms of goal differential, so a victory over Everton coupled with losses from the other two clubs would keep them in the Premier League for at least one more campaign.
Villa are the favorites to stay up as the club has been in good form with two wins and a draw in their last three matches. They are the only one of the three clubs fighting for their Premier League lives that are favored per the English soccer betting odds on Sunday, as Villa will take on 15th place West Ham. Interestingly, all three of these teams will be on the road as Villa plays in London Stadium, Watford travels to Arsenal, and Bournemouth heads to Everton.
