Last season was a very successful one for both Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United. Tottenham finished in the top three of the Premier League table for the third straight season, and the club was able to best Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid in order to make it to the knockout rounds of the Champions League for the first time in seven years. As for Newcastle United, the Magpies were able to comfortably finish in the middle of the table after being promoted from Championship the season before.

Odds Analysis
For Spurs the goal this season is to win the Premier League. Tottenham didn’t make any big moves in the offseason, being content to stand pat and continue to develop the core of talented players they already have. The club did less over the summer than any other team in England, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Newcastle would love to be able to make it to European play this season, but the club would certainly be content with staying up in order to help its finances. Next year, the Premier League’s new television contract kicks in, and that will mean a massive bump in payouts to every team that manages to stay up.
Key Injuries
There aren’t too many injuries to report on the side of Newcastle. The Magpies are going to be without star center back Florian Lejeune for much of the season after he suffered an ACL injury at the end of July, and that will sting. However, there are no other long-term concerns at the moment and the only other two players on the injury list are goalkeeper Martin Dubravka and midfielder Mohamed Diame. Both players are considered probable but check Diame’s status before placing a bet.
Tottenham sent a number of players to the World Cup, and it will be interesting to see how many suit up for this match. Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Kieran Trippier, Danny Rose, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld, Eric Dier, Hugo Lloris, and Mousa Dembele only recently returned to the club after their teams made extended World Cup runs. The club is hurting in the midfield at the moment with Harry Winks, Victor Wanyama, and Joshua Onomah all ruled out. Moussa Sissoko is listed as questionable after suffering an injury during the International Champions Cup, but he is likely to play given the other injuries. Erik Lamela might feature too for the same reason.
Player to Watch
A lot will be asked of Christian Eriksen on Saturday. The Danish international was the star of his team during their trip to the knockout round of the World Cup, and Mauricio Pochettino will be looking for that form in this match. Spurs are likely to be very shorthanded, and they won’t have Son Heung-min available either after he was released to play for South Korea at the Asian Games. He will be asked to create and distribute and hold together a line-up that will likely see a number of reserves start. Eriksen should have Lucas Moura available though, and the Brazilian has really stood out in the preseason.

Newcastle is one of the tougher places to play in the Premier League, and the Magpies have a great chance of picking up points against one of England’s top teams in this one. The club has one of the most underappreciated managers in the world in Rafael Benitez, and he will devise a strategy that will limit Tottenham. I like Newcastle on the goal line here, and I believe they will pick up a result.
English Premier League Odds: Newcastle United 2, Tottenham Hotspur 1
