Group H is expected to be one of the easiest groups at the 2022 World Cup. Portugal was the lowest-ranked Pot 1 team other than hosts Qatar, and Ghana ended up being the lowest-ranked team to make this competition. South Korea was the second-lowest ranked Pot 3 team, and Uruguay was a below average team in Pot 2. It will be extremely important to win this group as the second-place team will like face Brazil in the Round of 16.
Odds to win 2022 FIFA World Cup Group H
Portugal -160
Uruguay +210
Ghana +1150
South Korea +1150
This is the last time that we will see Cristiano Ronaldo at the World Cup. One of the greatest players of the last generation helped lead Portugal to glory at the 2016 European Championships, but the Portuguese have only made it past the Round of 16 at the World Cup twice in their history. The legendary Eusebio led Portugal to a third-place finish in 1966, and The Navigators survived the Battle of Nuremberg to make the semifinals of the 2006 World Cup before losing to France.
Ronaldo will turn 38 next February, but he is still playing at a high level. He has netted 117 goals in 189 caps for the national team, and he is back at Old Trafford. There are plenty of talented young forwards ready to replace his production like Joao Felix, Andre Silva, Goncalo Guedes, and Diogo Jota, but there will never be another CR7.
The other veterans to watch on this side are midfielder Joao Moutinho, center back Pepe, and goalkeeper Rui Patricio. All three players have over 100 caps, and this is expected to be the swan song for those players too. The future is bright with other stars like Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, Danilo Pereira, and Joao Cancelo though.
On a similar note, Uruguay might not make the World Cup for a while after this tournament. The Sky Blue are two-time World Cup champions and have made it to the semifinals of this competition five times, but all of their stars are set to age out. Luis Suarez (68 goals in 132 appearances) will turn 36 in January, Edinson Cavani (58 goals in 133 appearances) will turn 36 in February, and Diego Godin and Fernando Muslera are even older.
Uruguay’s hopes rest heavily on Suarez and Cavani. They have been elite forwards for over a decade, but both players have seen their performances really tail off in recent years. Cavani did not feature much for Manchester United last season and is not currently playing professionally anywhere. Meanwhile, Suarez is playing for the club he debuted with in Uruguay after two up-and-down seasons at Atletico Madrid.
American soccer fans know full well how dangerous Ghana can be on this stage. The Black Stars have made the knockout rounds in two of their three World Cup appearances. Andre Ayew and Jordan Ayew are the two goal scorers to watch on this team, but neither player has been too impressive recently. The older Ayew is now playing professionally in Qatar, while the younger Ayew is at Crystal Palace.
The back line has some talent as Baha Rahman and Daniel Amartey are playing at the highest level in England, and Jonathan Mensah has made a name for in the MLS. Midfielder Mohammed Kudus is someone to keep an eye on in Qatar, while Thomas Partey is probably the most talented player on the roster.
South Korea has become a mainstay at the World Cup. The Taegeuk Warriors have now qualified for 10 straight World Cups. They have only won six games at this competition though, and three of those wins came when South Korea co-hosted the World Cup with Japan in 2002.
Son Heung-min is the star of this team. Son has 33 goals in over 100 games for South Korea, and he was in excellent form with Tottenham Hotspur last season. There aren’t many other players on this roster playing professionally at the highest levels though. Most of the recent call-ups play professionally in either South Korea or Japan, so there are questions about their level of play ahead of this event.
