We are in the middle of the season in tennis, and the second Grand Slam event is on the horizon. The world’s best tennis players will descend on Roland Garros in Paris for the 2022 French Open starting on May 22.
The defending French Open champion is a slight favorite to win for the third time at Roland Garros. Novak Djokovic is the best all-around player in men’s tennis today, and he has 20 Grand Slam titles to his credit. However, Djokovic is not as dominant on clay as he has been on hard court or grass. Additionally, Djokovic is getting a little long in the tooth and will turn 35 on Sunday, so he isn’t as spry as he was in his prime.
2022 Men’s French Open Betting Odds
Novak Djokovic +165
Carlos Alcaraz +200
Rafael Nadal +310
Stefanos Tsitsipas +1050
Alexander Zverev +2800
Casper Ruud +6000
All Other Players +7000 or More
Has the time finally arrived for Carlos Alcaraz to announce his presence to the world? Alcaraz has been seen as the best young player for the last couple years, and he has taken his game to the next level this year. He is currently ranked No. 6 on the ATP Tour at the age of 19, and he won the Rio Open and Miami Open before heading back to Europe for clay court season. Alcaraz won the Barcelona Open and then really took his game to the next level at the Madrid Open by beating Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Alexander Zverev in three straight days to win the event. That has led to Alcaraz surpassing Nadal in the men’s tennis betting odds.
Rafael Nadal will forever be known as the King of Clay Court. Nadal’s record 13 French Open titles will never be challenged, as we have never seen a player quite like him on this surface. He has only lost three matches at Roland Garros in his career, but he is no longer the same player he was in the past. Lower-body injuries have really taken a toll on Nadal in recent years, and he will turn 36 in early June.
The only other player that oddsmakers think has a realistic chance of winning the French Open is Stefanos Tsitsipas. He was one of the players that was supposed to challenge the triumvirate of Nadal, Djokovic, and Roger Federer, but he has yet to win a major. Tsitsipas made the French Open final last year after beating Daniil Medvedev in straight sets and then beating Alexander Zverev in the semifinals. He was an underdog against Djokovic but won the first two sets to come within striking distance of his first major. Unfortunately, he lost the next three sets to lose the final in heartbreaking fashion.
Alexander Zverev should be able to make a deep run at Roland Garros, but it’s hard to have faith in him to win his first major. Zverev hasn’t made it past the semifinals of the French Open, and his only Grand Slam Final came at the 2020 US Open where he blew a two-set lead against Dominic Thiem.
There’s been some buzz surrounding Casper Ruud. The Norwegian is one of the top clay court players in the world, and he could be poised to make his first quarterfinals appearance at a Grand Slam event. Ruud has been bounced in the third round of the French Open the last three years, but he made it to the finals of the Miami Open and the semifinals of the Italian Open.
Two-time French Open finalist and one-time winner Stan Wawrinka may have some value at 250-1 to win the second major of 2022. Wawrinka is 37 and on the downslope of his career, and he has spent the last year recovering from a foot injury that needed surgery. He could make a bit of a run since he is very familiar with this venue.
