Novak Djokovic is a massive negative odds favorite to capture his fifth consecutive Wimbledon singles title and eighth overall, but he isn’t even the top seed for the sports grandest event. Adhering to the ATP rankings, the All England Club slotted No. 1 ranked Carlos Alcaraz as the top seed. Now, it’s not like Djokovic is fading or anything like that rather he hasn’t played as often and thus dropped in the rankings. Djokovic hasn’t played in a month since winning his record 23rd Grand Slam title at the French Open. Alcaraz meanwhile climbed a spot in the rankings by virtue of his grass court win at the Queen’s Club last weekend.
With his win over now No. 16 Alex de Minaur, Alcaraz also closed the gap between himself and Djokovic on the odds board. As the second favorite Alcaraz stands at +350. There is a massive gap to the third favorite with Daniil Medvedev on the board at +2041. Medveded will likely be playing with a chip on his shoulder after athletes from Russia were banned from last year’s tournament.

Djokovic is practically unbeatable on grass courts, which is why he’s a prohibitive favorite to win a fifth straight title. A winner in nearly 86 percent of his grass court matches at the highest level during his career is complete dominance. And he’s well rested not playing since a straight sets win over Casper Ruud at the French Open a month ago for his record 23rd Grand Slam title. There isn’t much value backing him at negative odds so let’s take a look at who could pull an upset.
I think the only player that can legitimately challenge Djokovic right now is Alcaraz. He has the raw talent, is younger and got a jolt of confidence with his recent win at Queen’s Club. “Of course, recovering the No. 1 before Wimbledon, it gives you extra motivation, it gives you extra confidence coming into Wimbledon. But it doesn’t change too much if I play Wimbledon as the No. 2 or the No. 1,” Alcaraz said recently. There had been some issues playing on grass, but those appear to be removed after he didn’t lose a set over the final four matches of his most recent victory.
There are some good players with handsome payouts starting with Medveded. And like I said he could have added motivation to play well. However, since winning the ATP Masters in May he’s gone just 2-3 losing his first match at the French Open and in the Netherlands.
Jannik Skinner is a worthwhile bet after his showing last year. He beat Alcaraz in the Round of 16 and nearly upset Djokovic in the quarters winning the first two sets. He’s 33-12 so far this year continuing his rise up the rankings. I wouldn’t bet the farm on him though since a little wager will get you a nice payday if he’s able to defy the odds.
Wimbledon Picks
Alcaraz could be the next big star on the men’s side and he’s playing winning tennis. But as much as I’d like to see someone rise to the occasion no one does it better than Djokovic. Time will eventually take a toll, which is why Djokovic doesn’t compete as often as he once did. He saves his best for the bigger events and he’s a demon on grass. There just isn’t anyone better.
