Rafael Nadal is the unquestioned favorite coming into this year’s French Open as the defending champion and No. 1 player in the world right now. Nadal has won more Roland-Garros men’s singles titles than any other participant. He will aim to add another championship to his mind-boggling ten titles. He comes in as the -250 favorite, which is a testament to just how dominant he has been at this event. Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem have the next-highest odds to win at +753 each but once again this is Nadal’s tournament to lose. Let’s look at the tournament and French Open picks.
2018 French Open Dates: Monday, May 27, through Sunday, June 10, 2018
Location: Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France
French Open Tennis Odds Favorite: Rafael Nadal
French Open TV Coverage: ESPN, NBC, Tennis Channel
Nadal comes into this one as the heavy favorite with good reason. His career record in this event is an unreal 79-2. With Roger Federer sitting out the clay court season and missing this year’s French Open, it paves an even easier road for the defending champ and No. 1 seed. Nadal picked up his most recent title at the Italian Open, defeating Zverev in the final and overtaking Federer for the No. 1 world ranking once again. He has won 16 Grand Slam titles in his career with the majority of those coming at this event.
Zverev, the World No. 3, is still looking for his first Grand Slam title. The 21-year-old has had success on a big stage, defeating Novak Djokovic in last year’s Italian Open for his first first Masters 1000 title of his career. He picked up his third Masters 1000 title earlier this month, defeating Dominic Thiem in the final of the Madrid Open. He’s a young player with a ton of potential.
Thiem comes in as another player to watch. He made it to the semifinals of the French Open the last two years in a row. Like Zverev, Thiem has yet to win a Grand Slam tournament but does have nine other ATP Tour titles to his name. His most recent came in February, when he defeated Aljaž Bedene in the championship match to twin the Argentina Open.
Novak Djokovic comes in with the fourth-best odds to win the 2018 French Open. The former World No. 1 won this event in 2016 and has captured 12 Grand Slam titles in his career. Djokovic underwent elbow surgery in January and did not return to practice until March. He’s always a contender when healthy, but the 31-year-old just has not looked like himself this season. He snags the No. 20 seed for this tournament.

Draw Analysis
Does the draw even matter? Nadal is ready to take on any and all comers in the French Open. Zverev is an intriguing foe with youth on his side, but it’s going to be tough for him to compete against the No. 1 player in the world on a surface he dominates. Djokovic will aim to make a deep run although his low seeding could result in a tougher-than-usual schedule early on in this tournament.

Don’t over-think this one. Djokovic is not at the height of his powers and Federer isn’t playing. Those are the reasons why Nadal is such a huge favorite and there is no reason to think anyone else in the field will have what it takes to knock him off. Zverev is an interesting underdog option but stay with the favorite and ride Nadal to another French Open title in tennis odds.
