Tennis Props – U.S. Open Men’s Preview Lines

Novak Djokovic hasn’t won the U.S. Open since 2015 but the oddsmakers have anointed him the favorite to win the 2018 tournament. Djokovic is a two-time winner of the event with five runner-up finishes, so it makes sense as to why he is the player to beat, but the two other stars of the sport will aim to knock him off.

Roger Federer had a dominant run at the U.S. Open in the early 2000s, capturing the title for five straight years from 2004 to 2008. However, he hasn’t won it since and has only the third-best odds despite the past excellence.

Rafael Nadal is the reigning champion of the U.S. Open. He knocked off Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 last year to claim his third tournament title here. These three players have been atop the sport for years and are expected to battle it out for the crown.

The rest of the field has longer odds in tennis wagering.

U.S. Open Men’s Tennis Odds Favorite: Novak Djokovic +240

U.S. Open TV Coverage: ESPN

The only players to pull through and win the U.S. Open besides Nadal, Djokovic and Federer since 2004 are Juan Martin del Potro, Andy Murray, Marin Cilic and Stan Wawrinka.

Wawrinka is the most recent winner among that group, claiming the 2016 U.S. Open title with a 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 win over Djokovic. Not surprisingly, all four of these players are on the next tier of favorites. They aren’t expected to win but have shown their ability to do it in the past.

The only other player within the group of champions who has not won a U.S. Open is Alexander Zverev. He is playing good tennis and has the fourth-best odds to win the tournament, behind only the big three.

Draw Analysis

Nadal is the top seed and Federer is No. 2, so there is no concern about them meeting before the finals. Federer got the short end of the stick because Djokovic is the No. 6 seed, which means he and Federer are on a collision course to meet on their side of the bracket.

This is a huge break for Nadal. While Zverev and Anderson are the Nos. 4 and 5 seeds and could give him a tough match, Nadal has a clear path to the finals. As the defending champion and top seed, he couldn’t ask for much more.

Djokovic might be the best player in this tournament, but the draw favors Nadal. Those two and Federer have each won a Grand Slam Tournament in 2018, proving they are still the players to beat on the tennis circuit. None of the underdogs are going to crash the party. Look for a championship match that features Nadal and Djokovic.

While the favored Djokovic will make the finals, Federer could take a lot out of him and allow Nadal to come away with the win. At +360 odds, Nadal is a solid choice to repeat at the U.S. Open in tennis wagering.
