They’ve played a number of close games but the bottom line is winning and the Kansas City Chiefs have done that all season occupying the top spot on the NFL futures odds board. Good teams put themselves in position to win close games; great teams win them. The Chiefs won their ninth straight game this season and 15th in a row overall blocking a potential Denver game-winning field attempt in the final seconds. It wasn’t the prettiest showing with Patrick Mahomes struggling, but the Chiefs overcame a 14-3 second quarter deficit and the defense blanked the Broncos in the second half to allow for another comeback win. Things get turned up a notch in Week 11 when the Chiefs visit Buffalo. The Bills have won five in a row to build a commanding lead in the AFC East and they are just two games back in the loss column making this an important game.

The Bills have improved their standing in the Super Bowl champion market as has Detroit. The Lions overcame five Jared Goff interceptions and rallied to beat Houston, 26-23, on Sunday night. In previous games the Lions used the entire roster to win games and that played out again in Houston. The defense allowed just 3.8 yards per play, intercepted a pair of passes and sacked C.J. Stroud four times. The offense rallied and Jake Bates kicked a pair of long field goals as the Lions rattled off 19 unanswered points. The Lions have shown they can win in a variety of ways making them the best team right now in the NFC.

Several teams have seen their Super Bowl odds skyrocket this season. There was optimism around the New York Jets with Aaron Rodgers back from an Achilles injury. However, that hasn’t panned out and at 3-7 the Jets have a worse record than they did at the same time last year when they were 4-6. Jacksonville was also a fringe contender and they’ve been worse going 2-8. They gave Trevor Lawrence a lot of money in the offseason and his campaign has been a disaster. The good news for Trev is that the offense was even worse when he was out. Lawrence sat out the most recent loss with a shoulder injury and the Jags totaled just 143 yards in a loss to Minnesota.

Houston Texans

Outside of the five favorites these are the teams that I feel offer some value as a Super Bowl pick as we head into Week 11 of the NFL season. They are listed in no particular order with Houston first. The Texans are experiencing some adversity having lost two straight and three of four, but they have a comfortable lead in the AFC South allowing them some wiggle room. How they work through their struggles will tell us a lot about them. They snuck up on opponents last season winning the division and they don’t have that luxury this year. They will have to win games they maybe shouldn’t, setting them up for a playoff run.

Pittsburgh Steelers

I don’t think the Steelers and Mike Tomlin are getting enough credit this season. Tomlin has never had a losing record in tenure as coach of the team and the Steelers are leading the AFC North slightly ahead of Baltimore. They have a Super Bowl winning QB in Russell Wilson, who has thrived in the system after a miserable stop in Denver, and the defense is among the best in the NFL. They have yet to play a division game, though that changes in Week 11 with the first of four straight starting with the Ravens. How they hold up against their peers will give us an idea of what to expect moving forward.

Los Angeles Chargers

If defense wins championships the Chargers have to be considered a Super Bowl contender. The Bolts boast the NFL best scoring defense allowing a little over 13 points per game and no opponent has scored more than 20 points against them. Jim Harbaugh brought a physical style of play to LA that was so successful in the college ranks and a previous NFL stint when he won 44 regular season games and made three NFC Championship game visits in a four-year run with San Francisco.

Arizona Cardinals

This might seem silly to some, but if you’ve been paying attention you know what I’m talking about. The Cardinals head into their Week 11 bye on a four-game winning streak and haven’t allowed a touchdown in the past two outings. They beat the Jets and Bears in those games by a combined score of 60-15. Their four losses were to teams among the elite in the NFL with record between them of 29-9 with two of them decided by one score.

Washington Commanders

I’m not sure if the Commanders have the staying power but with the help of Jayden Daniels, Dan Quinn has turned the franchise around. Daniels is on his way to the Rookie of the Year award. Washington ranks among the top 5 in the NFL in total yards, rushing yards and points per game. They’ve also been stingy on the defensive side ranking fifth-best against the pass while allowing fewer than 22 points per game.
