There isn’t an overwhelming World Series favorite like we have seen in past years. The Houston Astros are considered the team to beat given their recent success, and that’s fair considering what they were able to do in the offseason. Houston has made it to at least the ALCS in six straight seasons, and the Astros have made it to the World Series in four of the last six seasons, winning it all twice. This franchise lost ace Justin Verlander in the offseason, but Houston still has a great rotation and one of the most dangerous lineups in baseball. The Astros added Jose Abreu this offseason, and we saw Jeremy Pena turn the corner in the World Series. Houston is the biggest favorite to win its division at -217 to win the AL West per the MLB futures odds, so it’s safe to call the defending World Series champions the team to beat in March.

2023 World Series Contenders Other than the Houston Astros
New York Yankees +716
The Bronx Bombers could very well be the American League pennant winners if they continue to get good play out of their rotation. Gerrit Cole is a legit ace though he struggles giving up the long ball, and the Yankees added Carlos Rodon to give them a second proven arm. However, there are real concerns about Nestor Cortes and Luis Severino and whether or not they can do it again.
Los Angeles Dodgers +796
It’s somewhat strange to see the Los Angeles Dodgers at almost 8-1 considering how much money this front office has spent on acquiring as much talent as possible. There are real concerns about this pitching staff with Walker Buehler on the Injured List and Clayton Kershaw no longer the ace he once was though, and suddenly San Diego looks like a real threat. Top utility man Gavin Lux suffered a torn ACL, and that could be a big issue if Max Muncy continues to struggle at the plate. There are some great bats though as J.D. Martinez could have a big year flanked by Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Will Smith.
New York Mets +816
The New York Mets said goodbye to ace Jacob deGrom via free agency, but the Mets might still have the best rotation in the majors. Max Scherzer is still pitching at an elite level and has been dominant in Spring Training, and they added Justin Verlander from Houston. Edwin Diaz is an elite closer, and the new rules regarding pitch clocks will make these pitchers even better. It would be huge if another bat emerged alongside Pete Alonso, Starling Marte, and Francisco Lindor.
Atlanta Braves +912
The 2021 World Series champions continue to be competitive. Max Fried and Kyle Wright both might be aces, and Spencer Strider had a breakout 2022 campaign. Michael Harris II was awesome and ended up being named 2022 NL Rookie of the Year for his play in center field, and there are quality bats up and down the lineup like Ronald Acuna Jr., Matt Olson, Austin Riley, and Travis d’Arnaud. Backup catcher Sean Murphy could rejuvenate his career in ATL too.
San Diego Padres +927
Suddenly, the San Diego Padres are contenders once more after they spent another offseason spending lavish amounts of cash. Xander Bogaerts was signed to a long-term deal, and the Padres re-upped Manny Machado. Juan Soto is primed to have a bounceback season, and Fernando Tatis Jr. shouldn’t miss much more action. This lineup could be the best in baseball if everyone stays healthy, but the pitching staff is a concern despite the money spent to improve in this area.
