The final weekend of the 2024 MLB season is upon us with a few games on Saturday, September 28 likely having postseason implications. Entering the weekend three teams are fighting for two wild card spots in each league. The Padres will play a role in which team joins them in the NL playoffs. The Padres secured a playoff spot and can finish anywhere from NL West champ to third wild card. They take on the Diamondbacks, who have a slim lead for the third wild card. An explosive run by the Detroit Tigers moved them in a playoff spot and facing the worst team in baseball is bonus to help their unlikely quest. The interleague game between Kansas City and Atlanta could have the biggest impact with both clubs trying to secure a postseason bid. They are scheduled to play a night game weather permitting.

I have one last chance to hit a regular season MLB parlay and I think I nailed it with these wagers. There are just a handful of games that mean something in terms of postseason and with team locked in or eliminated what’s their motivation? Last week’s parlay was a bust with two of my picks losing outright. The Phillies lost 6-3 to the Mets and the Dodgers lost to Colorado by the same score. The red-hot Tigers came through for me beating Baltimore, so at least I had something.
And speaking of Detroit I’m going back to the well in their matchup with the White Sox. I’ve had a lot of success betting against the Sox, including last week’s same game parlay win, so I’ll keep it going on the final Saturday. They’ve nearly completed the mission winning 13 of their last 16 games after Wednesday’s win over Tampa and a playoff spot is theirs for the taking. Included in that run was a four-game sweep of the Sox and the Tigers have won nine of the first 10 meetings.
It’s too little to late but the Giants are playing good baseball as the season nears its conclusion. They had won five in a row and seven of eight against Baltimore, Kansas City and Arizona before the Dbacks ended their streak on Wednesday. The Cardinals are a few games over .500 but they are the only team with a winning record that has a negative run-differential. And they haven’t been a good road team giving me confidence to back the Giants.
The Orioles played painful baseball over several weeks with their AL East hopes wiped away and a wild card put in jeopardy. You had to figure they’d turn things around and getting help from their closest pursuers in the wild card standings helped. The O’s got some relief beating the Yankees on Tuesday to clinch a playoff spot and they want to be playing their best ahead of the postseason, or at least better than what they’ve been doing. Minnesota was a big help losing 14 of 20 games prior to Wednesday’s win over Miami.

Last week wasn’t a complete failure as I hit another same game parlay taking the Padres on the runline and the UNDER in their game with the White Sox. The Pads won 6-2 on a total of 8.5. The A’s will no longer be Oakland’s team after this weekend, and while they’ve been a surprise there is a letdown after festivities of their final home game. These clubs have played some boring games in the past and that’s not a bad thing. In fact it leads to plenty of games going UNDER the total and I’m betting that happens again with the M’s getting a victory over the team formerly known as Oakland.
