The Boston Red Sox are playing with fire, as a recent losing streak has dropped them multiple games out of the second spot in the American League wild card chase. Boston has virtually no chance of catching the New York Yankees in the American League East this season so its only real shot of making the playoffs is the wild card. Boston and New York face off on Sunday, and the Yankees would love to deliver another blow to the Red Sox’s chances with a victory.
The Yankees are in contention for the best record in the A.L. and would love to grab it in order to get home field advantage in the postseason. While the motivations are different, the stakes are high for both the Red Sox and Yankees in this game. That doesn’t even mention the rivalry aspect of this showdown, as it should be a fun one to watch.
This MLB game between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees will be held at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York at 7 p.m. ET on Sunday, August 4th, 2019. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN.

Odds Analysis
The Red Sox have a record of 59-51. They have lost four straight games to fall behind the Rays and the Athletics in the wild card hunt. Boston has been good on the road this year with a mark of 32-22 and has to hope that success continues in New York.
The Yankees have a record of 68-39 on the season. They have struggled a bit with only four wins in their past 10 games but overall have been really impressive this year. New York has gone 39-18 on the year at home and will aim to build on that.
Probable Pitchers
Boston is projected to send veteran left-hander David Price to the mound. He is 7-4 on the season with a 3.86 ERA. Price isn’t as dominant as he was in his prime but is still a good pitcher. He has nice peripheral numbers but has struggled of late, giving up 13 earned runs over his past three starts. Price gave up five home runs in that span and if he can keep the ball in the yard he should be able to bounce back, but that is easier said than done against the Yankees.
New York is scheduled to counter with veteran left-hander J.A. Happ. He is 8-6 on the season but with an ugly 5.19 ERA. Happ is allowing opposing batters to hit .276 on the season, which is evidence that he is leaving the ball over the plate much too often. Happ has given up three runs or fewer in four of his past five starts, so maybe he is beginning to turn things around.
Trade Deadline Effect
It was interesting to see that the Red Sox and Yankees, two of the biggest buyers at the trade deadline traditionally, both stood pat this year. The Astros picked up star right-hander Zack Greinke, and they are likely going to be the favorites to win it all now. New York believes it has enough good players to defeat the Astros if they meet in the playoffs, but finishing with the best record in the American League just got tougher.
The Red Sox didn’t want to sell off future assets because their positioning is precarious, but we will see if either team regrets not being more aggressive at the deadline.
Free MLB ATS Picks
The Yankees have been really good at home this season and have a great lineup, but Happ has struggled all year. The Red Sox need to jump on him early, and look for that to happen. Even though Boston won’t be catching New York in the standings, it will secure a crucial win on Sunday.
MLB Score Predictions: Red Sox 7, Yankees 5
