After failing to win the World Series the last two seasons, the Los Angeles Dodgers are on a quest to capture their first World Championship since 1988. Sporting the best record in the NL rather comfortably, the Dodgers are on their way to surpassing the 90-win mark for a seventh straight season. After taking down the Chicago Cubs in the opener of this four-game set, the Dodgers are half way there with over 90 games left to play. The teams will end the weekend set and season series on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball.

Odds Analysis
We could be witnessing a playoff preview with the Dodgers running away with the NL West and the Cubs in a dogfight with the Brewers in the NL Central. The Cubs looked unbeatable going 6-1 on their most recent homestand, but things have been quite different for them on the road. They ended a five-game road losing streak by beating the Rockies before heading to LA and they fell to 2-8 in their last 10 after dropping the opener of this series.
Hyun-Jin Ryu could be average the rest of the season and he’d still be a front runner for the NL Cy Young, that’s how dominant he’s been so far. The Dodgers had won his previous six starts and were on their way to another Monday until Ryu exited and the pen squandered a lead to the Angels. Overall the Dodgers are 9-4 in his starts. The Dodgers have cleaned up at home as the NL’s most profitable home team with a 26-7 record.
Probable Pitchers
Chicago’s struggles on the hill are mirrored by the results of Jose Quintana ( 4-6, 3.89 ERA ), who labored over 4.2 innings Tuesday against the Rockies at Coors Field. He had control issues walking a season-high four and allowed three earned while throwing 86 pitches. He hasn’t pitched past the fifth inning in two of his last three starts and is winless in five decisions while the team has lost his last four starts and six of his last seven.
Quintana faced the Dodgers on April 23 going 7.0 innings and allowing four hits and two runs with seven strikeouts in a 7-2 victory. He’s had problems on the road this season with just a 1-3 record and 5.13 ERA across 33.1 innings.
The Dodgers have a dominant lefty and it isn’t who you think. Nope, it’s Hyun-Jin Ryu (9-1, 1.36 ERA ), who was in line to become the first 10-game winner in the Majors until the pen coughed up a lead on Monday night. Ryu exited after 6.0 innings and 99 pitches with a 3-1 lead, but got a ND. The only run he allowed was a Kole Calhoun homer, just the seventh surrendered all season.
It’s amazing how much better the numbers are when you didn’t give away bases. A lot of Ryu’s success can be traced back to his impeccable control. He hasn’t walked a batter in his last two starts and hasn’t issued more than one in a game. Ryu has walked just five batters all season in 86.0 innings.

Getting the starters out of the game puts both teams in a much better position to score runs. Every team has a weakness and for these two it’s the bullpen. The Dodgers have lost 23 games with a member of the relief corps getting slapped with an L 13 times. LA’s relievers boast a 4.41 ERA through Thursday while the Cubs bullpen ERA is 4.28. Both are in the bottom half of the MLB rankings.
