Last year Justin Verlander of the Houston Astros won the American League Cy Young Award and is a justifiable favorite to do so again. But not the top favorite. That distinction goes to Verlander’s old Houston teammate, Gerrit Cole of the New York Yankees. Cole signed the biggest contract in history for a pitcher this past offseason which set off a firestorm of Yankee hype and futures betting. And Cole has posted numbers good enough for Cy Young honors, despite the fact he has not ever won the award. Let’s take a look at what is a quality field in the American League for the 2020 Cy Young Award.

2020 AL Cy Young Award Odds Overview
Gerrit Cole arrives at the Bronx as a top shelf favorite with the record to back up such status. However, the price on Cole offers no real betting value. The combination of being touted as the new Yankee savior and the Bronx Bombers already favored to win the World Series has sent Cole’s price into orbit.

Gerrit Cole
Cole arrives at New York as a three-time All-Star including the past two seasons while with Houston . Last year was a career year for Cole as he went 20-5 with a 2.50 earned run average and WHIP of 0.89. The big question is if Cole can really top or even equal the best season of his seven-year career.
Chris Sale
Sale is a seven-time All-Star and in fact had his seven-year streak in that category ended last year. He remains one of the top favorites despite the fact that he may not start the season due to a flexor strain. Sale’s numbers diminished badly last year as he went 6-11 with a 4.40 earned run average and 1.09 WHIP. It was the worst season of his career. But prior to that he was one of the most dominant pitchers in the game.
Justin Verlander
Verlander is Houston’s number one starter and was the 2019 AL Cy Young Award winner. It was the second Cy Young for Verlander of his career. Additionally, he is an eight-time All-Star including the past two seasons. Verlander was 21-6 last year with a 2.58 earned run average and 0.80 WHIP. At the age of 37 he simply keeps getting better.
Mike Clevenger
Clevenger is coming off three consecutive seasons of impressive pitching. Last year he went 13-4 with a 2.71 earned run average and WHIP of 1.06. In his three full seasons in the Big Leagues his ERA has never been over 3.11. Last year he struck out 169 batters in 126 innings of work.
Corey Kluber
Kluber is a two-time AL Cy Young Award winner from 2014 and 2017 while with the Cleveland Indians . Kluber missed virtually all of last year due to injury but is expected to return to form as a new Ranger. In 2018 he was 20-7 with a 2.89 earned run average and 0.99 WHIP.
Blake Snell
Snell makes for an interesting play in that he was the 2018 AL Cy Young Award winner with the Tampa Bay Rays before falling off badly last year due to injury. In 2018 Snell was 21-5 with a 1.89 earned run average and WHIP of 0.97.
