At the onset of the Major League Baseball season there are two prohibitive favorites with the MLB odds. The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees are touted to be on a collision course for a date in the Fall Classic. Both are insanely priced to win their respective divisions. New York won the AL East last year and now has the added benefit of its arch nemesis, the hated Boston Red Sox, seemingly hoisting the white flag of surrender with the Mookie Betts trade to the Dodgers. But are they really? The Tampa Bay Rays were pesky enough to make the Wild Card last year but don’t come close to matching the Yankees depth or power. Meanwhile the Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles are classic go-against teams. Let’s examine the AL East for 2020.

Almost every season the Yankees are a top tier favorite with the MLB odds. They combine the biggest payroll, greatest history, largest fan base, and ultimate name brand to command the inflated retail price tag that comes with all of that. Tampa Bay was a favorite of sharps in 2018 but the squares arrived late to bet away their value in 2019. Boston rivals New York is a marquee brand and public team but nobody seems to be buying anymore. While Toronto and Baltimore have zero appeal with the wagering masses.

Can you believe the last Yankees World Series title was all the way back in 2009? And that is their only win in the Fall Classic since 2000. Just as interesting the Bronx Bombers had last won the AL East in 2012 before the 2019 season. Starting pitching was the demise of the Pinstripes last year and Gerrit Cole was paid the biggest contract for a pitcher in history to change that. At the current price there is absolutely no value on betting the Yankees to win the AL East.
Tampa Bay Rays
The Atlantic Coast version of Moneyball uses strong pitching to defy the gravity of a low payroll. Tampa Bay just doesn’t score enough runs to be taken seriously as a top shelf contender. What was strange about last year was that the Rays finished in the red on the gambling board despite winning 96 games.
