Since their epic back to back American League pennants of 2014 and 2015 which included the 2015 World Series title the Kansas City Royals have reverted back to their old ways of being an also ran and big-time money loser on the MLB Board. Kansas City is coming off seasons of 58-104 in 2018 and 59-103 in 2019 with a steady shower of red ink for gamblers. Not much in the way of improvement is expected, although with an over under win total of 64.5, the Royals are at least favored to avoid another triple-digit loss campaign in 2020. Since the end of their George Brett glory years from 1973 through 1993 the Royals have posted only four winning seasons, three of which were from 2013 through 2015. 2020 marks the beginning of a new era in Kansas City.

The betting public was caught for the brief period of the Royals return to glory but has quickly gotten over it. Kansas City is again considered to be a team to avoid, if not outright oppose when it comes to the perception of gamblers. The Royals will open 2020 with new ownership as John Sherman purchased the club last fall from the late David Glass right before his passing. Sherman has deep Kansas City ties and says he is committed to putting a consistent winner on the field. Also new is manager Mike Matheny, who takes over for the retired Ned Yost.
Manager Mike Matheny
Ned Yost retires as the only other manager besides Dick Howser to win a World Series title with the Royals. Jim Frey was the only other KC skipper to win a pennant with the Royals. Matheny previously managed the St. Louis Cardinals from 2012 through 2018 where he won a National League pennant. Matheny holds the distinction of being the only manager in history to lead his team to the playoffs in each of his first four seasons. He faces a daunting task in taking over a Royals roster in ruins. KC ranked 26th for run production and 27th for staff earned run average last year.
On the Hill
Left hand starter Danny Duffy has been a regular in the Royals rotation since 2014. Last year he managed to overcome his weak supporting cast to post a winning record of 7-6 with a 4.34 earned run average and a WHIP of 1.31.
Right hander Brad Keller will begin his third season as a Royals starter and took a bit of a step back after going 9-6 with a 3.08 earned run average in 2018. Last year Keller was 7-14 with a 4.19 earned run average and WHIP of 1.35.
At the Plate
Designated hitter Jorge Soler stunned the baseball world when he emerged as the 2019 American League home run champion. Soler clobbered 48 home runs to go with 95 runs, 33 doubles, 117 runs batted in, .265 batting average, .569 slugging percentage and a .922 OPS. Prior to last year Soler’s highest home run total was only 12 in 2016 as a member of the Chicago Cubs.
Center fielder Whit Merrifield was a 2019 AL All-Star. Whitfield hit .302 with 105 runs, 41 doubles, 16 home runs, 74 runs batted in with an OPS of .811.
2020 Kansas City Royals Win Total MLB Betting Odds Pick
This is going to be a very long year in Kansas City but there is hope for the future with new ownership. But that will not help gamblers or the team in the immediate season to come.
