MLB Odds – Atlanta Braves at San Francisco Giants

Atlanta Braves at San Francisco Giants

The San Francisco Giants retained a number of players from their championship years. The only problem is the last title came in 2014 and those players have gotten older and less productive. The Giants wish they had some young talent like the Atlanta Braves have on their roster. The youthful group sparked a playoff run last season and has the organization set up well for the future.

The Braves have expectations of repeating as NL East champs while the Giants are looking to stay out of the NL West cellar when the clubs meet in the second game of a four-game series from Oracle Park in San Francisco on Tuesday night.

This MLB game between the Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants will be held at Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, at 9:45 p.m. ET on Tuesday, May 21, 2019. The game will be nationally televised on ESPN.

Odds Analysis

Making up some ground in their division by handling a pair of contenders from the NL Central, the Braves are hoping to continue the momentum that’s seen them win seven of nine games prior to this series. They enter on a sour note, though, after their four-game winning streak was stopped by the Brewers on Sunday. The Braves’ offense has received a boost from Freddie Freeman, who homered in four straight games.

Scoring has been an issue all season for the Giants, who average less than four runs per game while having one of the lowest team batting averages in MLB. That’s a lot of pressure to put on rookie Shaun Anderson, who will be making his second career start on Tuesday. The Giants enter the series on a bit of a roll for them having won two straight and three of four.

Probable Pitchers

The grizzled veteran on a young staff, Julio Teheran ( 3-4, 3.88 ERA ) has emerged as the ace thanks to some strong pitching over his last several starts. Using his breaking ball more to complement an above average heater with movement, Teheran has found success.

In 17 innings over his last three outings, he’s allowed just seven hits and one earned run while fanning 12 batters. He blanked the Cardinals on two hits over 5.0 innings in his last outing to get the victory, his only success in the stretch, though the club won all three games. Teheran lowered his ERA from 5.35 to 3.88 in that span while holding opponents to a .123 batting average.

An eventful Major League debut earned Shaun Anderson ( 0-0, 3.60 ERA ) another start, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday. The Giants top pitching prospect went 5.0 innings against Toronto last week giving up three runs, two earned, on two hits with five strikeouts in a no-decision. The day will likely be remembered for what he did at the plate. Anderson had a pair of hits, including a double, in the 4-3 victory.

In seven Triple-A starts prior to his promotion, Anderson compiled a 4.11 ERA over 35 innings. He got the call after the team made some adjustments to its staff moving Derek Holland to the pen.

Nobody manages a bullpen better than Bruce Bochy, and it’s even harder to beat the Giants when the relievers are doing their job. Unfortunately for SF the starters haven’t held up their end of the deal this season. But when the game is close and gets shortened, look for Bochy to make changes on the bump. He’s one of the biggest reasons why games take so long with the number of changes he makes.

Five relievers who have tossed more than 17 innings on the year boast ERA’s under 2.90 with the entire group compiling the sixth-best ERA in MLB at 3.58. The group has blown only two saves, the third-lowest total in the league, while holding opponents to a .220 batting average. It behooves the Braves to strike early in this outing.

The Giants haven’t hit much this season, and it’s nothing new. They’ve struggled offensively the past few seasons with not much punch in the lineup. They have had a few outbursts, but the reality is that they aren’t going to score much. And with Teheran dealing in his last few outings, this is going to be the Braves’ game.

MLB Pick: Atlanta Braves 5, San Francisco Giants 2
